The Royals (55-52) have won seven of their last nine games and have jumped to three games above .500 behind a pitching staff that has allowed three or fewer runs in seven of their last 10 games.
Offensively, Kansas City is led by Alex Gordon who has 13 hits during that same stretch.

Meanwhile, the Athletics (66-41) are 7-5 since the All-Star break and remain the best team in baseball.
Their pitching staff has been a little wobbly lately, allowing four or more runs in five of their last eight games, including 19 runs in a three-game series against the Houston Astros.
They will hope the acquisition of Lester will solve that issue. The left-hander is scheduled to make his Oakland debut on Saturday.
In the meantime, the A’s will hand the ball to Sonny Gray, who has never faced the Royals, but is 7-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 12 home starts this season. The right-hander has 121 strikeouts in 139 innings and has won six consecutive decisions.

The Royals will counter an Oakland offense that is led by Josh Donaldson, who has eight RBIs in his last 10 games and Brandon Moss who has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, with starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Guthrie is 6-9, with a 4.70 ERA, and has battled consistency issues all season. He did however, break a three-game losing skid despite allowing five runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings against Cleveland in his last turn.
Guthrie is 3-4 with a 4.80 ERA in nine career starts against Oakland, while the Athletics are 20-7 in Gray’s last 27 starts.
