They are now sitting a half game up on Detroit, something we could not have envisioned even a month ago.

They have scored 11 runs in back to back games against Detroit and in most of these wins they have scored at least 6 runs. With the way they are playing you have to wonder how much longer we will hear about James Shields being on the trading block.
Jeremy Guthrie has contributed to the Royals recent success, just not as much as some others.

He won his last start at the White Sox with a season high 9 Ks and keeps the Royals in the game which is why he is so valuable as an innings eater. He has yet to face Detroit this season but his road and daytime splits are not promising. He is usually someone to fade.
Though the way they have been swinging it lately…
Detroit
The changes the Tigers made to their lineup has paid off but the pitching has become a concern as they have struggled over the last while.
Despite having what many thinks is the best rotation in the AL the Tigers are 25th in ERA this season.
Last year they were mowing them down but this they are only 24th in strikeouts and 15th in quality starts. The offense is top 5 but without quality pitching to back it up this team is sliding. They looked like the one sure thing in the AL and now they are in second place.
One of the reasons the Tigers were comfortable trading Doug Fister in the offseason was because they thought lefty Drew Smyly was ready to fulfill his destiny in the rotation. So far the early returns have been there and Smyly is coming off back to back starts where he has yielded just a single run.
In his lone start against the Royals this season he pitched 7 shutout innings with a season high 7 Ks.
KC is red hot but this one will definitely be a challenge as they certainly will not have an advantage on the mound. Still I am looking for the magic continue thanks to another good day at the plate.
If you think the run is over maybe go with the over instead of ML.
I just don’t see Detroit tripping them up 2-1.
