Milwaukee Brewers (39-30 through June 15)
Shaun Marcum (7-2, 2.68)

Playing for a huge new contract, Prince Fielder continues to tear the cover off the ball. In June, he’s batting .375 with eight homers and 17 RBI in 14 games.

Shaun Marcum has been the Brew Crew’s best pitcher this season, bar none. His strikeout rate has never been better and he’s held opponents to one run or fewer in half his starts. As a former Toronto Blue Jay, he also shouldn’t be uncomfortable facing another American League East team on Friday. Marcum is 3-2 with a 3.52 lifetime ERA at Fenway Park.

Boston Red Sox (40-27 through June 150
John Lackey (4-5, 7.41)

To quote the immortal Dennis Green, “they were who we thought they were.” It was only a matter of time before the Red Sox emerged as the class of the AL East. The BoSox are 10-1 over their last 11 games. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The man really leading the charge is, believe it or not, David Ortiz. Big Papi is turning back the clock. He’s about the only guy close to matching Prince Fielder’s June; Ortiz is batting .348 with five homers and 16 RBI over 12 games.

MLB Trends:

MIL are 23-10 in their last 33 overall.
Over is 7-0-2 in BOS last 9 on grass.
Over is 18-6-4 in BOS last 28 Fri. games.
BOS are 11-4 in their last 15 home games.

The pick:

My immediate instinct was to check Marcum’s track record against Ortiz. Papi actually doesn’t have a homer or RBI in 27 career at-bats (34 plate appearances with seven walks) against Marcum, so maybe the Brewers’ starter will keep him in check.

Can we say the same for John Lackey’s chances? Sure, he’s won two straight starts, but his team scored 22 runs over those outings. Lackey has an 8.27 ERA at Fenway Park this season. Even if Fielder can’t get to him, Lackey has allowed seven homers to righthanded hitters in 28.2 innings, so Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart could do a number on him.

I like the Brew Crew to slow Boston’s momentum this Friday night.

Brewers vs Red Sox prediction: Brewers 6, Red Sox 4
