Boston was out-hit 12-6 in Game 4, with the one through five hitters in the St. Louis lineup going 9-for-21, and accounting for four of the team’s runs and four of their RBIs. Both teams were forced to go to their bullpens early, with both sides bringing five different arms out of the pen.

Boston’s lineup changes had mixed results – David Ortiz did not have a great day in the field, although he did reach safely in three of four plate appearances, and Daniel Nava had a pair of RBIs.

The Cardinals will trot out Lance Lynn in Game 4. Lynn hit a real rough patch in the summer months, but turned things around at the end of the year. Lynn had been absolutely lights out at home to begin his career and into this season, but the bubble has burst on that idea. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Over his last six home starts, Lynn has a 1-3 record. In fact, in his only home start in the postseason, Lynn surrendered five runs over 4 1/3 innings of work, good for an ERA of 10.38 and a WHIP of 2.31, and the Pirates certainly don’t possess the type of potent offense that the Red Sox do. It’s also worth noting that Lynn has pitched 6 1/3 innings or fewer in each of his last eight starts.

The Red Sox send out Clay Buchholz in this one. Buchholz hasn’t been great in the postseason, posting a 5.40 ERA and allowing opposing batters to hit at a .275 clip, but the Red Sox have won two of his three starts, and were tied when he exited in the third game. Buchholz was lights out when he took to the mound on the road during the regular season. In seven road starts during the regular year, Buchholz was 6-0 with a 1.40 ETA with a 0.93 WHIP and .187 BAA. The Red Sox have done little but win when he takes the mound this season, going 16-3 in his starts, including a 7-1 record when he gets the nod on the road.

Few teams can play well with their backs against the wall the way the Red Sox can. The team came back from series deficits of 3-0 and 3-1 en route to their World Series wins in 2004 and 2007 – no one comes out punching when their backs are against the wall like the Red Sox. The added us-against-the-world mentality that the Red Sox will bring to Game 4 could be all the difference.

The Red Sox are 5-0 in Buchholz’s last five interleague starts.

The play: Boston -105
