Friday’s “Need To Know”

A look at the hot and cold pitchers going on Friday. The information you need to know whether it is for fantasy baseball or wagering contests.

Probable Hot Starting Pitchers going on Friday:

Ricky Romero (Toronto Blue Jays)

Were you expecting to see probable pitchers here that are hot like Tim Lincecum and Felix Hernandez? I decided to give them a break from the list and mix it up a bit here today.

Ricky Romero has been on fire he owns a season ERA of 3.00 and a 7-3 record for Toronto. The LHP has been even better as of late with a 1.98ERA and a 1.16WHIP in his last 5 starts while striking out 28 batters over 36.1IP. His main issue is control. He faced the Red Sox once before this year he went just 4 innings giving up 5ER on 6H and 5BB.

Despite pitching well as of late including 2 shutouts on 15IP in his last 2 home starts he has still struggled with his control 10BB’s in his last three outings. However, at home he has a 5-1 record with a 2.31 ERA and a 35:16 K:BB ratio which is pretty impressive. He’ll face Clay Bucholz who has been tearing up the minors for the Red Sox with a 7-2 record and a 2.36ERA. He did not fair well here in the majors last year so this may be an opportunity for the Blue Jays to get some runs. You may get a lot of value here on a sports pick for the Blue Jays -128.

A.J. Burnett (New York Yankees)

We have another extremely hot pitcher facing a rookie pitcher in Lucas French who has pitched 11 innings with a 2.45ERA in his first two starts. This is pretty impressive considering he faced the Rays and the Phillies, but he will have to have even better stuff in the Bronx on Friday night where offense is the capital this season.

Burnett seems to pitch just as well on the road as at home as he owns a 3.74ERA at home which in reality probably could be below 3 if Yankees Stadium was not as hitter friendly. Burnett has a 8.18ERA over his career of 5 starts vs. the Detroit Tigers so I would be very careful here. My sports betting advice would be to stay away from this game completely. Lucas French has the stuff to get Yankee hitters out especially since the scouting report is thin on him. The Tigers are also hitting .291 vs. RHP in their last 5 so I don’t like that match up, but I think the Yankees still win here, but the line will be over priced and the run line won’t be worth it.

Notables – Last 5 Starts!

Tim Lincecum (4-1, 0.78WHIP, 1.59ERA)
Ricky Nolasco (4-1, 0.79WHIP, 2.65ERA)
Jarr Jurrjens (2-2, 1.26WHIP, 2.97ERA)
John Garland (1-1, 1.29WHIP, 2.43ERA)
Roy Oswalt (2-1, 1.00WHIP, 2.68ERA)
Felix Hernandez (3-0, 0.84WHIP, 1.37ERA)
John Danks (3-1, 0.94WHIP, 2.12ERA)

Probable Cold Pitchers on Friday:

Paul Maholm (Pittsburgh Pirates)

The All-Star break could not come sooner for this LHP. Maholm will open up against baseball’s best pitcher in my opinion Tim Lincecum. So it won’t get much easier for him here tonight. Maholm does have the 2.96ERA at home with a 3-1 record. I really like him to have a solid 2nd half of the season just not here on Friday. His home/away starts ratio is 7:11 so expect more home starts in the second half and many quality outings. Something that has been rare in his last 5 starts he owns a 7.57ERA with a 1.94 WHIP.

He has 4 games starts vs. the Giants with much success so it won’t surprise me at all if he throws a gem here on Friday night as he owns a 3.00ERA lifetime vs. the Giants and the Giants who have a .194average in their last 5 vs. LHP does not impress me.

Joe Saunders (L.A. Angels)

Despite Saunders struggles here as of late 2.29WHIP and a 11.57ERA he has had success against the Oakland A’s over his career including a 0.89ERA over his last three starts vs. the A’s. Two of those starts came on the road where he will face the A’s on Friday.

He will go up against Trevor Cahil who the scouting report seems to have opened up against. He started the season solid, but over his last three starts he has not managed to go 5 innings with a 2.05WHIP and a 11.37ERA.

Notables – Last 3 Starts!

Ohka (0-3, 1.57WHIP, 6.85ERA)
Scott Olsen (1-1, 1.74WHIP, 5.52ERA)
