The Mets and Diamondbacks continue their 4 game set with game number 2 on Friday night from Chase Field in Arizona. Behind ace Matt Harvey, the Mets took the opener of the set 6-2. With the win, the Mets now control sole possession of the NL East lead.

As for the Diamondbacks, they sit 5.5 off the pace in the NL West, but now have to deal with Colorado right on their heels.

New York Mets vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

The Mets got off to such a fast start, people believed it was just a fluke. However, 55 games in and they haven’t gone anywhere as they took over the lead in the NL East with their 6-2 win on Thursday, combined with the Nationals 2-1 loss. They’ll look to make it 2 in a row against the Diamondbacks when they send south paw Jonathon Niese to the hill.

Niese has struggled this season, especially as of late. He received a no decision in his last start as he went just 4.0 innings allowing 7 hits and 5 runs (4 earned) in a 9-5 loss to Miami.

Prior to that no decision, he had lost 5 out of 6 games, including 3 straight. Combined in his last 4 starts, including the no decision, Niese has allowed 20 runs.

The Mets will have to continue to battle as their dealing with some injury issues. David Wright has been sidelined for quite some time and will now have to find a way to replace Daniel Murphy as he left Thursday’s contest with a neck injury.

As for the Arizona Diamondbacks, they have struggled to put together more than 2 consecutive wins lately. They’ve had their chances to go for 3 straight, but once again they fell short after their loss on Thursday. They’ll send the extra day rested Jeremy Hellickson to the mound.

Hellickson has won back-to-back starts pitching 6.2 and then 6.0 innings allowing just 3 and then 2 runs in wins over Chicago and Milwaukee.

Hellickson hasn’t faced the Mets since 2012, but he was knocked around in that start for 8 runs in just 3.2 innings.

Dbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt looks to stay hot as he’s hitting .480 over his last 7 with 4 home runs in that span.
