The top 2 teams in the AL Central square off for the 1st time this season when they Tigers invade Kansas City to do battle with the Royals. Up just a .5 game on Kansas City, the Tigers look to win their 3rd straight series against divisional opponents. The Royals have made their AL Central rounds as they will be facing a divisional opponent for the 4th straight series.

Detroit Tigers

The Tigers offense, like usual, has been in top form. In the finale against the Twins, Detroit pounded out 17 hits and scored 10 runs in a come from behind win to take the series. The Tigers have played 15 games against AL Central opponents and bring in an astounding 12-3 record in those games. They’ll send Alfredo Simon to the mound, who is not just making things look easy, but is also trying to become the league’s first 5 game winner.

Simon brings in a 4-0 record with just a 1.65 ERA. He’s 2-0 against the AL Central, with both wins coming against Cleveland.

On the road this season, Simon has allowed just 3 runs in 2 starts. He defeated Cleveland in what was his worst outing going 5.1 allowing 7 hits and 3 runs. Against Pittsburgh, Simon went 8 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits in a 1-0 victory.

Over his last 22 innings pitched, Simon has allowed just 2 runs.

In five appearances against the Royals, Simon has gone 3-1 with a save in a relief appearance.

Miguel Cabrera looks to stay hot even though he’s struggled inside Kauffman Stadium. In 2014, Cabrera hit just .189 there.

Kansas City Royals

The Royals have shown that their lineup, top to bottom, has the ability to put up a lot of runs. Kansas City took 2 out of 3 in Cleveland, and nearly came away with a sweep as they fell just short 7-5 in the finale. The Royals return home for a 7 game home stand, where they have played 7-2 ball this season.

The Royals will send Danny Duffy to the mound, who is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 4 starts this season.

Duffy’s lone decision came back on April 13th that saw him defeat the Twins 12-3. Duffy went 6.1 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 runs.

In his last start, he went 5.1 allowing 6 hits again, but just 1 run. The Royals bullpen couldn’t hold the slim lead as they fell in the end 3-2.

Duffy has struggled in his career against Detroit going 1-6 over 9 starts.

SS Alcides Escobar remains a game time decision as he was hit in the face with a fastball in the finale against Cleveland.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

  • Tigers are 4-1 in their last 5 games on grass.

  • Royals are 14-4 in their last 18 home games.
