The Pirates send out ace Gerrit Cole with a chance to win this series. The righty has really come into his own this season, taking the major step forward many expected from him.

[dfads params=’groups=63744&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

He’s been absolutely brilliant over his last six starts, going 6-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 0.97 WHIP.

He’s shown some signs of being human in his recent starts against the Reds, allowing three runs over five innings of work in each of his two starts against them this season.

[dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

That’s a departure from how he fared against Cincinnati in his last start from a year ago when he allowed one run on four hits, striking out 12 over seven innings of work.

The Reds counter with Mike Leake. The story with Leake always seems to be that he runs hot and cold, and he seems to be feeling the former right about now. In the month of June, Leake is 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.

A lot of that comes from his last start when he held the Miami Marlins scoreless over seven innings, striking out seven and allowing only two hits.

FREE Reds vs. Pirates Pick:

Neither pitcher figures to allow much in the way of runs in this one, so it should be a relatively easy night for the scoreboard operator in Pittsburgh. With that said, one would have to figure a pitchers’ dual between Cole and Leake would heavily favorite the Pirates’ ace.

MLB Betting Trends:

The Reds are 11-44 in their last 55 games as a road underdog, and they are 1-5 in their last six games against N.L. Central opponents.

The Reds are 3-13 in Leake’s last 16 road starts, and they are 7-20 in his last 27 starts as a road underdog.

[dfads params=’groups=63745&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The Pirates are 20-7 in their last 27 games as a favorite, and they are 22-8 in their last 30 games overall.

The Pirates are 6-0 in Cole’s last six home starts against opponents with a losing record, and they are 21-8 in Cole’s last 29 home starts overall.

The under is 4-1 in the Reds’ last five road games, and it is 10-2 in the Pirates’ last 12 home games.

The under is 8-0-1 in Cole’s last nine starts against opponents with a losing record, and it is 12-3-2 in his last 17 starts overall.

The under is 5-2 in Leake’s last seven road starts against the Pirates, and it is 12-3 in the Pirates’ last 15 games overall.
