The Pirates will be looking to get back on track in this series against the struggling Phillies. Otherwise they could have some serious issues.

Pittsburgh

The Pirates have not been very good this season but they just beat St. Louis on Saturday and Sunday so maybe things are about to turn.

The simple fact is that while the pitching has been great – 3rd in the league in ERA – the hitting has been suspect.

Andrew McCutchen cut his hair in the offseason and it seems like it has taken a while to adjust. He has a hit in every game in May save one and if he rounds into form this team should be just fine.

Gerrit Cole leads the team with a 4-1 record and appears to finally be able to command his powerful stuff. He is averaging better than a strikeout per inning and has been sterling on the road this season with an ERA under 2.

Per the odds this is a very favourable matchup as Philadelphia is pretty light though they do have veteran lefty bats that could cause trouble. Cole has not yielded more than 3 runs in any start this season.

Philadelphia

The Phillies might not truly hit rock bottom until they deal Cole Hamels but they are tied for the worst record in the Majors and there is little hope for any sort of turnaround this season. Over the weekend they dropped two of three to the Mets and have won only one series all season long.

This is going to be a very long season in the City of Brotherly Love but from what we have seen so far it might be even longer than originally thought. There is no aspect of this team for opponents to fear.

Jerome Williams should probably not be in the Majors.

I think the Phillies got enamored with his limited success from last season and thought they could steal another one but the results have been bad and the only reason he is still getting trotted out there is that the Phillies don’t really have any prospects they want to subject to their current state.

You have to fade the Phillies when this guy is dealing.

MLB Betting Trends:

  • Under is 6-1-2 in PIT last 9 road games.
  • Over is 5-2-2 in PIT last 9 games as a favorite.
  • PIT are 25-10 in Coles last 35 starts.
  • PHI are 2-6 in their last 8 games following a loss.
  • Over is 17-8-1 in the last 26 meetings.

MLB Betting Prediction:  Pittsburgh -173

You just can’t make a play on Philly in this one. The over is a possibility but I am not a huge fan.

MLB Score Prediction:  Pittsburgh 6 – Philadelphia 1

Back Pittsburgh and maybe make a run line play.
