The base numbers for each of these starting pitchers doesn’t tell the whole story and presents a perfect example of why bettors need to put in their research before walking to the betting window.

Ubaldo Jimenez gets the call for the Orioles.

He sports a shiny 1.59 ERA entering this contest, but he’s hardly been the kind of dominant pitcher that such a number would indicate.

Jimenez got roughed up a bit in his third start of the year against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing four runs in five innings of work. In his last start – against the Chicago White Sox – Jimenez gave up two runs, but they were unearned.

On the flip side, the Mets send out Jacob deGrom.

His ERA is bumped up by a lousy performance across the way in New York against the Yankees, in which he gave up six runs over five innings of work, including three home runs at that hitter-friendly venue.

Even still, deGrom’s K/9 rate is down from the 9.2 K/9 he sported a year ago which was out of whack with what he did in the minors.

While deGrom has never faced the Mets, Jimenez’s last appearance against them came way back in 2011 when he was still a member of the Colorado Rockies.

He was chased from that game in the fourth inning after giving up five runs on three hits and walking six batters.

Probably not worth reading too much into that one.

FREE Orioles vs. Mets Pick:

The Mets have been as good at home as any team in baseball, and getting them in their own ballpark at a short price is certainly a favorable proposition.

Additionally, the Orioles have had trouble scoring against N.L. East opponents, and the Mets have been having trouble scoring against anyone, making the under worth a look as well.

MLB Betting Trends:

  • The Mets are 7-2 in deGrom’s last nine home starts, and they are 6-1 in his last seven starts as a favorite.
  • The Mets are 5-1 in their last six games when playing the second game of a series, and they are 4-0 in deGrom’s last four starts as a favorite of -110 to -150.
  • The under is 11-4-1 in the Orioles’ last 16 games played on a Wednesday, and it is 17-7-4 in the Mets’ last 28 games played on a Wednesday.
  • The under is 3-0-1 in deGrom’s last four starts when pitching the second game of a series, and it is 4-1 in the Mets’ last five games when playing the second game of a series.
