The Mets have won 4 straight and with their recent sweep of the Washington Nationals they have now overtaken them in first place in the NL East. They are the road betting favorite tonight facing a Marlins team that has lost 5 of their last 6 games.

New York Mets

The Mets have not been in first place this late in the season since the 2008 season and they are winning with their pitching, as they have the 3rd best team ERA in the Majors. While they only rank 29th in the Majors in runs scored they are averaging 6 runs per game in winning 7 of their last 9 games.

The Mets have won 15 of their last 22 games facing the Marlins.

New York picked up Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers to bolster their offense and he had 3 doubles in his last game and has had success in Miami going 8 for 20 there in his career.

Miami Marlins

The Marlins are, pretty much, out of the playoff race and they sit in 4th place in the NL East 13 games back of the Mets. Their pitching has been decent this season ranking 14th in team ERA, but they rank dead last in the Majors in runs scored.

Brad Hand makes the start for the Marlins and he is taking the spot in the rotation from Dan Haren, who was recently dealt to the Chicago Cubs. He has mainly worked out of the bullpen on the season and he is 1-1 with a 6.17 ERA in 3 starts this season. In his most recent start he was less than impressive giving up 6 runs in only 1 innings of work in a 11-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hand is 0-3 with a 4.35 ERA in 4 career starts against the Mets.

The Marlins are 3-8 in Hands last 11 starts as a home underdog.

Jonathon Niese goes for the Mets tonight and the Mets have lost his last 2 starts. In his last outing he only gave up 1 earned run in 6 innings, but the bullpen fell apart and the Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 8-7.

In his last 9 starts Neise is 2-3 and has only received a grand total of 4 runs of support in that span.

Neise has won his last 2 starts against the Marlins in Miami even though he has an ERA of 6.75.

The Mets are 2-5 in Niese’s last 7 road starts.
