New York Mets

The Mets have to be the most pleasant surprise in the Majors so far. The good thing is that they have not been doing it all at home either, they have a 4-2 road record heading into the Bronx. Even though they lost a key cog in Zack Wheeler the pitching has been superb – second best ERA in the Majors.

They have won 11 games in a row and should not be overly concerned with taking on the Yankees this weekend. I don’t know how long this group can sustain this level of play but it is exciting.

deGrom is building nicely on last year’s rookie season. Through three starts his ERA is under one and he has issued only three free passes – his peripherals look great. He has not given up a run in either of his last two starts which will be hard to maintain against a Yankees lineup filled with vets, many of whom can slug from the left side.

Still expect him to battle and keep his team in the game.

New York Yankees

The Yankees are locked in a three way tie for first place in the AL East. The month of April has not always looked pretty but they have won six of seven and this team is currently second in the league in scoring.

Aging bats, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira have supplied the long ball hitting a combined 9 homers already.

Rodriguez has looked very good early but Tex is not doing anything other than go yard. He is batting below .200 but leads the club with 5 dingers. That doesn’t look very sustainable.

Michael Pineda can look dominant one inning and terrible the next. Through three starts he has put together an awesome strikeout to walk ratio of 10/1 but has been very hittable, giving up more than a knock per inning.

That says to me that he is catching a little too much of the strike zone.

All those hits are why his ERA is an even 5.00. he might be wise to bring back a little more wildness to keep guys off balance up there.
