Kansas City
The Royals have won only three of their last ten and just avoided a sweep at home against the Rangers with a one run victory yesterday.

The offense has really dried up of late as they have scored more than four runs just once over that span. The pitching has remained solid but it is hard to win when you are scoring two runs or fewer 70% of the time. Suddenly this series is about getting back on track and getting back into first place as the Twins are a couple of wins ahead.
Jason Vargas is nothing special but he is mostly dependable. His numbers are not what they were a year ago but giving up 2ER in each of his last four starts is hardly disaster territory.

His biggest problem is that he puts so many balls in play and this year they are finding holes at a rate greater than they have in the past. Maybe the law of averages works in his favour over time but he is going to be a strong fade candidate.
Minnesota
The Twins enter play today with the best record in the American League, something that likely hasn’t happened this late in the season since 1991 (I am sure someone will correct me). I am still not sold that they can maintain this level of success as I am not sure they are as good as fellow surprise team Houston, which is already starting to show some cracks. This is going to be a huge series for a group of players that is pretty much untested. What has Joe Mauer won?
Phil Hughes has not been nearly as good in his second season for the Twins. He has been getting hit hard with more than one home run allowed per start and 86 hits allowed over just 69 hittings. His control has been right where is was a year ago but he has not been missing too many bats.

If the Twins are going to sustain their performance at all he needs to be sharper.
