While the Mets and Giants may not play in the same division, there are big division implications for each team in this game.

The Mets are currently deadlocked atop the NL East with the Washington Nationals, and the Giants are just one game back of the Dodgers in the NL West.

The Mets are sliding from their once comfortable perch atop the East, while the Giants can’t seem to close the small gap on the Dodgers despite the National League powerhouse playing just .500 ball over their last 10.

Giants

San Fran will send Tim Lincecum (6-3) to the mound on Thursday night in Flushing, New York. The 30 year-old has posted a respectable 3.29 ERA and 49 K’s against 28 walks in his 11 starts this season.

The righty has been roughed up his last three starts however, and hasn’t lasted more than six innings and has surrendered four earned runs in each of his last three outings.

Pitching woes notwithstanding, the Giants’ bats have been alive in June and have scored 23 runs in their last five games and are 3-2 in that stretch, including a 5-0 drubbing on the back of rookie Chris Heston’s no-hitter against this same Mets team in the first game of the three game set.

The Giants were 6-1 against the Mets last season and took three of four games at Citi Field. The Giants have won 12 of their last 16 road games.

Mets

The Mets have managed to hang on in the very tough NL East and are deadlocked with World Series favourite Washington after 59 games.

Jonathan Niese (3-6) will take the hill for the Mets who might be one of the few pitchers on a rougher stretch than Lincecum. Niese has been roughed up for 26 runs in his last five starts, 23 of them earned.

The Mets were blanked by Chirs Heston on Tuesday night and the bats have been pretty silent during the team’s last 10 games where they’ve run off a 4-6 record. In their last five games the Mets have managed to plate just 15 runs.

If the Mets can’t score runs against a struggling Lincecum then they could be in for a long night as Niese has been anything but reliable for more than a month now.

Giants vs. Mets 4* Free Pick

Two pitchers that have had some trouble keeping runs off the board should make for an entertaining game (if you like seeing runs scored).

The Mets have not been bringing runners home the way that the Giants have and San Fran’s tremendous road record of late and dominance of the Mets should be enough to go with the slim favourites in this game.

Take the Giants.
