It is opening day so optimism abounds.

Cleveland

The Indians had a good season last year but expectations heading into 2015 are high – some have them even making the World Series.

This is a very solid team from top to bottom and I like the reinforcements they brought in, especially Brandon Moss, who will add power to the lineup.

To follow through on the hype they will need Michael Brantley to once again be an MVP calibre player plus incremental improvement in a lot of areas, including the back end of the pitching rotation.

At the top of that rotation is reigning Cy Young winner Corey Kluber.

Depending on who you ask his 2014 season was a breakout or a progression, but no matter how you look at it he was awesome last year. Odds are he regresses somewhat but you can still expect him to be among AL pitching leaders all season long.

There is no reason to expect he won’t pick up where he left off.

Houston

The Astros have been building and come into this season more committed to winning than they have been in a while.

It could still mean another last place finish but they added to the lineup by acquiring power source Evan Gattis to add to an already powerful group that includes Chris Carter and George Springer.

If they can get Jon Singleton sorted out they would have a lot of pop to go with hit machine Jose Altuve at the top. The cupboard is certainly not bare in Houston

On the mound Houston has some nice arms but nobody really jumps out.

Coming off a solid season Dallas Keuchel gets the opening start at home but he is not really ace material. It’s not that he can’t get guys out but he is more of a finesse pitch to contact type.

His ERA was just under three last season but topped five the year before. Only time will tell which is the true indicator of his level.
