The Jays are back home after a success road trip that put them back in first place.

Detroit may be out of the race but they still have enough to put a hurt on a lot of teams.

Detroit

For the first time in several season the Tigers are in spoiler mode. Unfortunately they are not doing a very good job of it.

Other than a makeup game thrown in against the Reds this will be their sixth straight series against real playoff contenders and they have been averaging only one win per. This is a slugging club but they have needed shutouts to get their last two wins.

The Tigers have been kicked down a notch but they were smart enough to see the writing on the wall and make moves that will help them in the future. Including one with the Jays.

The product of one of those deals was lefty Matt Boyd (who I actually saw make his debut live).

Since coming to Detroit Boyd has been hit hard. Whether with the Jays or the Tigers he has not been able to keep the ball in the park and against a lineup like the Jays have that is going to be very challenging.

He has pitched at Rogers Centre before and might be inspired tonight but the Jays just kill lefties. You have to stay away from him until he settles down at the Big League level. It looks like Detroit is going to give him that chance.

Toronto

Even though they lost the final game of their series with Texas the Jays are still hot. They went 5-1 against the Rangers and Angels, putting a hurt on teams that are fighting for that final playoff spot in the AL.

Returning home they will be looking to increase their lead over the Yankees and have a stretch of six games against the sub .500 Tigers and Indians at home before spending all but one series in September in the division.

Even though they scored just one run yesterday there is no cause for concern. This is still the best hitting lineup in the Majors this season.

His record is still below .500 for the season but R.A. Dickey has been a big part of the Jays success in the second half.

Some have been gems and others not but the Jays have won his last seven starts and even when he gets hit he has a way of settling down and letting that great offense get the team back into the game – see his last start against the Angels.

I wouldn’t say he has mastered the Rogers Centre but he has been better there this season with a 6-3 record and an ERA 2 runs lower than on the road.

The total is not small but the Jays and Tigers are more than capable of pushing this to double digits
