ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

Up until the last time the two teams met, the Reds (39-38) have had the upper hand, claiming the season series each of the past three years, including taking six of seven in 2013.

The Reds closed out its series in Chicago on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the Cubs. It was just the second time in six games the Reds have scored four or less runs, as they have averaged 6.2 runs while winning 10 of their last 14.

Most of those coming from backstop Devin Mesoraco, who had his streak of five straight games with a home run dashed on Wednesday night.

Mesoraco has done a good job picking up some of the slack left by second baseman Brandon Phillips, who missed all three games against the Cubs. Phillips is 8-for-16 against Ryan Vogelsong, who is scheduled to start against Cincinnati on Thursday.

The right-hander is 3-3 with a 4.84 ERA in nine career starts against the Reds, beating them on the road earlier this month, allowing just two runs over 6 1/3 innings, while fanning a season-high nine batters. The 36-year-old has been solid at home, registering a 3.33 ERA in eight home starts this season.

Meanwhile, San Francisco (46-32) continues to sit atop the National League West despite losing 11 of their last 15. They did however, avoid the sweep in San Diego on Wednesday, beating the Padres 4-0.

The G-men will look to carry that momentum into game one with the Reds, facing starter Mike Leake, who has struggled against San Francisco’s potent lineup.

A total of six Giants’ hitters have combined for 11 home runs off Leake, who has won two straight starts.

The right-hander held Toronto to one run and four hits over eight innings in an 11-1 victory his last time out and is 4-1 with a 4.38 ERA in six career starts against San Francisco. His lone loss came earlier this month when he was saddled with five runs in as many innings.

2. The Giants are 27-13 against opponents who are above .500 and 19-19 versus teams below the break-even mark.

Matt’s Free Prediction: UNDER-

My gut tells me San Francisco wins this, but Vogelsong’s inconsistency scares me a little. Tough one for the Reds who are going to feel the effects of travel too, so I am going with the total on this one, which I predict will stay under.
