ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The White Sox (51-55) have slowly crawled back into American League wild card contention with a combination of good pitching and solid hitting.

First baseman and rookie of the year contender Jose Abreu is batting .371 with three homers during a 17-game hitting streak, while catcher Tyler Flowers is 14-for-27 with six doubles and a homer in his last eight games.

Left hander Jose Quintana who has also helped the White Sox get back in the hunt, will try for his first win in three meetings with Detroit this season when he toes the rubber in game one tonight.

Quintana has a 1.70 ERA and has pile up 49 strikeouts over 21 starts, surrendering just three or fewer earned runs in 18 games. He is 2-1 with a 3.26 ERA in six career starts against the Tigers, including a pair of quality starts earlier this season.

Detroit (57-45) will counter with Anibal Sanchez who is 2-3 with a 3.30 ERA in five career starts against the White Sox. The righty has posted just one quality start in four outings in July, registering his seventh win of 2014 his last time out, with a win over Arizona despite allowing five runs and 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings. He lost the White Sox his last time out.

Sanchez will hope that his team can support him as the Tigers aim to end their offensive struggles. They arrive back home after a miserable four-game road series against the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend, scoring a total of two runs and posting just a single win.

Nevertheless, the Tigers still hold a comfortable five-game lead in the American League Central, but that could change if they can’ get their high-powered offense back on track.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Tigers

The Tigers hold a 5-4 advantage for the series this season, including splitting a four-game series in Detroit during April.

And while Detroit has had its share of offensive setbacks as of late, it’s about time for it to break out of its slump, and Quintana appears the key in making that happen.
