However, Boston (52-65) has had its way with the Reds in interleague play, taking seven of the eight all-time meetings, including a two-game sweep at home in May.

The Red Sox have recently won four of six to inch closer to the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, even though they have encountered a bit of a scoring drought.

Centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. is hitless in his last 35 at-bats while rookie of the year contender Xander Bogaerts is just 3-for-35 with one walk in his last nine games.

Meanwhile, the Reds (60-58) are experiencing a scoring shortage of their own, dropping the first two of a three-game series against the Marlins over the weekend.

Besides a pair of home runs from catcher Devin Mesoraco in a 7-2 win on Sunday, Cincy had only put up total of four runs during the previous two games.

Mesoraco is tied for the team lead with 20 home runs and has four extra-base hits in his last three games.

The scoring dearth took another hit when Reds first baseman Brayan Pena, who owns a 13-game hitting streak, went down with a hamstring injury and has been listed as day-to-day.

The Red Sox will aim to add to the Reds hitting woes by sending Joe Kelly to the mound in game one.

The right-hander gave up just one run and three hits in seven innings against his former team when he was still in a Cardinals uniform just before the trade deadline, and is 2-0 while allowing a total of two runs in three appearances versus Cincinnati.

The Reds will counter with trade deadline bait Mat Latos who they decided to keep. The right hander recorded two straight wins over Miami and Cleveland in his last two starts while surrendering a total of four runs on 11 hits in 14 2/3 innings.

This is Latos’ second career game against the Red Sox, while going 9-3 in 17 interleague starts.
