The Rays continue to mystify by hanging right in there. To continue to do so they have to have this series too.

Atlanta

For a while the Braves were hanging in there but now they have sunk to their level. Not quite as bad as the Phillies and Marlins but well behind the contenders in the NL East. The real question though is how promising is their future after all of their wheeling and dealing over the last year.

The Braves got shutout last night by Tampa and I wonder about their offense moving forward. Freddie Freeman is young and a nice cornerstone hitter but I am not putting much stock in the likes of Cameron Maybin and Andrelton Simmons being bats to fear in the future…and their pitching is just not good enough.

Matt Wisler may have a 5-2 record but his underlying peripherals are not all that strong. Unfortunately for Atlanta his best start of the season was his Major League debut against the Mets in June, which could mean that any time he faces a lineup with a pulse he has problems. He does have a perfect record at home this season but on the road he has been hit pretty hard. It is hard to get excited when he takes the hill.

Tampa Bay

With the second Wild Card as long as you have a winning record you can consider yourself in the race. After last night’s win Tampa is sitting right there at one game over and even though I doubt it, they have to be considered a threat. They just won’t go away thanks to a pitching staff that is deeper than you think.

If only they had a lineup that could push even four runs across with regularity they would be in a great spot. Top home run hitter Steven Souza is out til next month and Evan Longoria is having one of his worst seasons in the Majors. This team just has no margin for error but they have won three in a row.

Chris Archer gets most of the attention and deservedly so but Jake Odorizzi is also very good, just not as flashy. He has given up more than 3ER in a start just once in his last seven and is lights out at home with a 1.40 ERA. With better offensive report he would be much more than a .500 pitcher.

4* MLB Betting Prediction:

There is not a lot of value to be had here because Tampa is a heavy favourite but tough to bet on the run line.

MLB Baseball Score Prediction: Tampa Bay 4 – Atlanta 3

If the number on TB comes down during the day you can make a play but you might have to take a pass or parlay with something to get a decent payoff.
