Over the past decade St. Louis and Chicago have dominated the NL Central by winning the division a combined nine times. The Cardinals have six titles and the Cubs have three. The only other team to win the Central in this time frame was Houston in 2001. The Cincinnati Reds snapped this streak in 2010 by winning the Central with a record of 91-71, but their success was short lived after getting swept by Philadelphia 3-0 in the NLDS.

St. Louis finished in second place, five games back with a record of 86-76. In third place was Milwaukee, who finished 14 games back at 77-85. The Astros were fourth with a record of 76-86. Chicago finished fifth at 75-87 and Pittsburgh brought up the rear, finishing 57-105; 34 out of first.

Here is a brief preview of all the teams in the NL Central along with their future odds to win the division and the ‘over/under’ on their win total as provided by SportsBook.com.

MLB 2011 Previews and Predictions – NL Central

NL Central Odds: Milwaukee Brewers +200
Win Total Over/Under 85 ½

There is little wonder that the Brewers are the current odds-on-favorite to win the Central this season given the addition of Zach Greinke and Shaum Marcum to the starting rotation to go along with Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun’s bats. These off season moves have helped to make Milwaukee one of the most complete teams in the NL.

NL Central Odds: Cincinnati Reds +240
Win Total Over/Under 85

There is little doubt that with players such as Joey Votto and Jay Bruce anchoring the lineup, the Reds will once again be one of the best offensive clubs in the NL. The problem with Cincinnati is that it’s pitching remains suspect which could easily stand in the way of repeating as division champions.

NL Central Odds: St. Louis Cardinals +250
Win Total Over/Under 83 ½

The loss of 20-game winner Adam Wainwright, who recently underwent Tommy John surgery, will have a major impact on the Cardinals chances of getting back on top in the Central, but this team is still loaded with enough talent to remain competitive. St. Louis will have Chris Carpenter leading the starting rotation and the bats of Albert Pujols and Matt Holiday to provide the run support. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

NL Central Odds: Chicago Cubs  +400
Win Total Over/Under 81 ½

The Cubs should be able to improve upon last season’s 75 wins with the addition of pitcher Matt Garza and first baseman Carlos Pena. They also added Kerry Wood to the bullpen as their new set-up man. New skipper Mike Quade had a 24-13 record down the stretch last season and should have this ball club primed and ready to go come April.

NL Central Odds: Houston Astros +2500
Win Total Over/Under 72

The Astros will go with pretty much the same cast of characters as last season’s 76-win team but it is hard to see them winning many more games than that this season. Houston has a few solid starters in Brett Myers and J.A. Happ, but they are still lacking the offensive firepower to finish any better than the middle of the pack in the division.

NL Central Odds: Pittsburgh Pirates  +3000
Win Total Over/Under 67 ½

The Pirates actually have a decent amount of young talent throughout their roster, but they need to establish some level of consistency to avoid another disastrous 100+ loss season. Pittsburgh has to hope that players such as Neil Walker, Andrew McCutchen, and Jose Tabata grow up in a hurry to avoid a 19th-straight losing season.
