The Mile – Saturday November 6th Post Time: 4:40 P.M. (EST)

The Mile is a weight for age race open to Thoroughbreds age 3 and up. It is contested on a turf track at a distance of 1 mile with a total prize purse of $2,000,000. There are six automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race.

Goldikova

This filly will be going for the three-peat in The Mile after winning this race the past two years. She can make history with a win as no other horse has ever won the Breeders’ Cup Mile three years in a row. Trained by Freddie Head, this Irish-bred filly has 11 victories in 14 career starts with most of her wins coming overseas. Her last victory was in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp in early October.

The Usual Q.T.

His first victory this year was in a $55, 000 Allowance race at Hollywood Park back in June. He followed that up with a huge win in the grade I $300,000 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar on July 24. After a disappointing fifth place finish in the grade I $1 million dollar Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar, The Usual Q.T. responded with a second place finish in the grade I $1 million dollar Woodbine Mile Stakes on Sept. 19.

Gio Ponti

This horse is no stranger to Breeders’ Cup racing as he raced in the 2007 Juvenile Turf as a two-year old and took second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last year at Santa Anita. This year he won the grade I $600,000 Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont Park on July 10. Gio Ponti followed that up with a second place finish in the grade I $1 million dollar Arlington Million Stakes on Aug. 21 and an impressive victory in the grade I $600,000 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland on Oct.9.

Court Vision

This will be his second shot at winning The Mile after finishing fourth in last year’s race at Santa Anita. He comes into this year’s race as one of the favorites after winning the grade I Woodbine Stakes in September. This was a “Win and You’re In” race as part of the Challenge Cup race series giving Court Vision an automatic entry into The Mile. Known as a cool weather horse, he should provide the biggest threat to ending Goldikova’s streak.

Predicted winner of the 2010 Mile: Court Vision
