The Classic is a weight for age race open to Thoroughbreds age 3 and up. It is contested on a dirt track at a distance of 1 ¼ mile with a total prize purse of $5,000,000 and is the Crown Jewel of the Breeders’ Cup featuring the top horses in the world. There are four automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race along with their opening odds.

Zenyatta                   8-5

This six-year old mare has captured the attention and admiration of the entire horse racing world as she tries to end her storied racing career a perfect 20-0 with a victory in The Classic. Trained by John Shirreffs and ridden by Mike Smith, she will break from the eighth post for this race. Two of her 19 victories came in the Breeders’ Cup; the 2008 Ladies Classic and last year’s Classic both at Santa Anita.

Quality Road           5-1

The third favorite for The Classic drew the first post for the race which is not the best position in the world but one that is still considered manageable for jockey John Velazquez according to Quality Road’s trainer Todd Pletcher. He has seven victories in 11 career starts including wins in four out of five races this season. His last victory came in the grade I $750,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 4.

Lookin At Lucky      6-1

This three-year old Colt came into prominence with a victory in the second leg of this year’s Triple Crown, the Preakness. He also has victories in the grade I $1 million dollar Izod Haskell Invitational Stakes at Monmouth Park on Aug. 1 and the grade II $500,000 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park on Oct. 2.

Blame                       9-2
