Preakness Betting – Rachel Alexandra Looks To Make History

Preakness odds and post positions have been set for the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race course, and the sportsbook favorite is a filly looking to become the first female to win the Preakness since 1924.

Rachel Alexandra will be ridden by Calvin Borel, who steered Mine That Bird to glory in the Kentucky Derby a couple of weeks ago. However, the day before, Borel had ridden Rachel Alexandra to a dominating 20-length win at the Kentucky Oaks, which brought her into the spotlight. She’s won all five of her starts this year as a three-year-old, and three of the victories have come by at least eight lengths. Rachel Alexander’s Preakness odds are 8/5.

Pioneer of the Nile is next after coming in second to Mine That Bird at the Derby, and he has Preakness odds of 5/1. A second-place run isn’t too bad when you consider that was Pioneer of the Nile’s first start on dirt, and he looked really strong, but no one in the field was any match for Mine that Bird.

Mine That Bird is far from the 50/1 longshot who scored the second-largest upset in Kentucky Derby history, as Borel navigated the horse through early traffic, and in a move reminiscent of his 2007 Derby win with Street Sense, he took Mine That Bird to the rail and it was on from there as he galloped to a victory of almost seven lengths. Mine That Bird has Preakness odds of 6/1 this Saturday at Pimlico, and it’ll be interesting to see how the horse handles with a different jockey.

Another horse that people will have their eye on is Friesen Fire, who shares 6/1 Preakness odds with Mine That Bird. Friesen Fire was named the Kentucky Derby favorite after I Want Revenge was scratched on the morning of the race with an ankle problem, but he never had a chance, starting slow out of the gate before struggling to an 18th-place finish out of 19 horses.

All eyes will be on Rachel Alexandra in this race, as she attempts to become the first filly since Nellie Morse in 1924 to win the Preakness, and only the fifth overall. She has the right man leading her through the track, and one of the reasons for the low odds on her is that Borel has ridden her all year. Mine That Bird would probably be a safe online betting pick, but it’s very difficult to look past Rachel Alexander’s Preakness odds.

Rachael Alexandra did what everyone said she would, blow away the field at the Preakness. Mine That Bird made a strong bid for a second straight win, but had too much ground to make up.
