2010 belmont stakes wagering – No Triple Crown but Belmont’s worth a wager

While this weekend’s $1-million Belmont Stakes may be a bit anticlimactic, it’s still a favorite of Horse Racing bettors.

For the 32nd-straight year, there is no Triple Crown candidate. And for the first time since 2006, both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winners will be no-shows.

But that just means a wide-open field for the third and final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown, which takes place Saturday (6:30 pm ET, ABC).

betED.com Belmont Stakes Odds have Fly Down and First Dude as co-favorites at +450, followed by Ice Box at +480. Make Music for Me, Stately Victor, and Interactif, all at +1000, round out the top five.

In 2006, with the Derby and Preakness winners not in the race, the winner was a relative unknown – Jazil, a horse with just one win in seven career starts. It could be much the same this year. Of the 12 colts and geldings expected at the gate Saturday, four have only one career win.

Ice Box may end up being the morning favorite, as the colt, trained by Nick Zito, was impressive in winning the Florida Derby on March 20, and then came on strong in the Run for the Roses, finishing second behind Super Saver. Ice Box did not run in the Preakness.

The Belmont Stakes – established in 1867, two years after the Civil War ended – is the oldest and, at 1.5 miles, the longest of the Triple Crown races.

Affirmed was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, in 1978. He was the great-great-grandson of Triple Crown winner War Admiral through damsire Crafty Admiral, which made Affirmed the great-great-great grandson of Man o’ War, who won two of the three Triple Crown races.
