This is the first leg in horse racing’s fabled Triple Crown with the Preakness and Belmont to follow.

The Derby has one of the largest fields of any major race with 20 horses scheduled to make this year’s “Run for the Roses.”

Here are the current odds, along with a preview of my top five horses for Saturday’s race.

Lookin at Lucky      2-1

As the odds-on-favorite for this race the pressure is on as traditionally they tend not to win. Trained by Bob Baffert, this horse won the Eclipse Award as the Champion two year old male. As a three year old he won the Rebel Stakes and finished third in the Arkansas Derby. He will be starting from the 1st post and ridden by Garrett Gomez.

Sidney’s Candy      4-1

Trained by John Sadler, the second favorite comes into this race with an impressive resume as a three year old. He pulled off the West Coast Triple Crown by winning the San Vicente Stakes, the San Felipe Stakes, and the Santa Anita Derby. He will start from the 20th post and be ridden by Joe Talamo. Bet on the Kentucky Derby

Ice Box   8-1

Trainer Nick Zito was a bit leery about this horse’s chances to make the Derby field after a fifth place finish in the Fountain of Youth Stakes back in February, but his convincing win the grade I Florida Derby in March clearly makes him a legitimate contender on Saturday. He will start from the 2nd post and be ridden by Jose Lezcano.

Mission Impazible   15-1

This horse took an extended layoff after finishing third in the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes last May. As a three year old he came back to finish fourth in the Southwest Stakes. He sealed his spot in the Derby by winning the Louisiana Derby on March 27th. He will start from the 14th post and be ridden by Rajiv Maragh.

Stately Victor     25-1

Last year Calvin Borel rode a 50-1 long shot; Mine That Bird to victory in the Derby. If I had to pick a candidate to pull off another improbable victory this year it would be this horse. Trained by Michael Maker, he won the grade I Blue Grass Stakes as a 40-1 long shot after finishing off the board in his previous four races. He will start from the 6th post and be ridden by Alan Garcia.

My pick for the 2010 Kentucky Derby:

1. Sidney’s Candy      Win
2. Ice Box                    Place
3. Lookin at Lucky     Show
