2009 Kentucky Derby Pick

Kentucky Derby 2009 Trifecta Pick

Handicapper Craig Trapp is by no means an expert when it comes to horse racing. But that has not kept him from getting into the predictions for this year’s Kentucky Derby. The first Saturday in May is so exciting watching groups of three year olds trying to cement a future legacy for themselves. With the economy in a recession it’s nice to be able to get away from the negative press and focus on good stories.

Craig is going to give you his Trifecta winning prediction and breakdown below.

1. Pioneer of the Nile: This horse has improved in every race this year and is coming off a very good win of the Santa Anita Derby. Usually horses coming from California’s Poly Tracks do not fare well on the dirt tracks of the Midwest.

This year Pioneer of the Nile will end that streak and set right off the front runners and take over on the turn and hold off the late charging field. Garrett Gomez had to choose between Nile and other top favorite Dunkirk. Gomez thinks Nile is improving and obviously being trained by Bob Baffert influenced his decision also.

racebook Currently listed at 4-1 co 2nd favorite with three other horses. Would be great win bet if and only if the odds are 4-1 or higher!!

2. Dunkirk: Trainer Todd Pletcher has been one of the top two trainers for last 5 years but has never had the bed of roses as of yet. He has stated this is his best chance to win the derby. Unfortunately this horse is losing jockey Gomez as he has chosen to ride other favorite Pioneer of the Nile. Now piloting this colt will be Edgar Prado. Dunkirk has been racing down south all season and after finishing 2nd in the Florida Derby tries to jump up and win the Kentucky Derby. Love the tenacity and fight of this colt and think he will be sitting in the 2nd flight of horses right off the leaders. Will kick in final home stretch but will come up just short over Nile!!  Currently is 4-1 and most likely will go off higher at more like 6-1!

3. General Quarters: Craig’s long shot to create huge value in his trifecta and will be at least 20-1 at post.  Trainer Tom McCarthy is 75 years old and is making his first and he says only Kentucky Derby starter. Also the best jockey in the Kentucky circuits the last few years is Julian Leparoux.  General Quarters most recently won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keenland and is definitely heading in the right direction. The best feel good story with a one horse trainer looking to upset all the big boys.  Love the story and if General Quarters is over 20-1 at post time make sure you put some cash on him to win.  Would be surprised if he runs poorly hitting the board is a definite possibility.

Craig’s Trifecta horses should all be in the thick of things come the home stretch and Craig is laying some nice cash on them as a trifecta box.

Also Craig is playing Pioneer of the Nile and General Quarters across the board for a nice chunk of change!

Good Luck and enjoy the Run for the Roses!!

I like Pioneer of the Nile, Friesan Fire, and Chocolate Candy as my trifecta boxed pick. This should also provide a decent return with Chocolate Candy currently at 20-1
