Green Bay’s 2009 season ended in one of the wildest playoff games in the history of the NFL. After finishing with an 11-5 regular season record, the Packers faced the Cardinals in Arizona in the Wildcard round of the playoffs.

Unfortunately they ended up on the losing end of game that combined for a playoff record 96 points and 1,024 yards of total offense.

The positive take away from that game was the confirmation that Aaron Rodgers is a big game quarterback after he threw for 423 yards and four TD’s in the losing effort.

Heading into the 2010 season, Rodgers has a firm grasp of this Packer’s offense as well as clearly being the undisputed leader of this team. In two seasons since taking over for Brett Favre, he has thrown for close to 8,500 yards and 58 TD’s but finally appears to be ready to call this team his own and lead it back to the top of the NFC North.

He is surrounded by a number of weapons including WR’s Donald Driver and Greg Jennings, who combined for close to 2,200 receiving yards on 138 receptions in 2009. TE Jermichael Finley added another 55 catches for 676 yards and five TD’s while WR James Jones averaged almost 14 yards a reception and also had five TDs.

RB Ryan Gant has established himself as one of the premier ball carriers in the league. Last season he rushed for 1,253 yards on 282 attempts. Rodgers was actually the team’s second leading rusher with 316 yards on 58 runs. The Packers offense ended 2009 ranked sixth overall; 14th in rushing offense and sixth in passing.

As good as Green Bay’s offense was, their defense played just as well especially down the stretch last year. The Packers ended the season with the second ranked defense in the league.

They were ranked fifth against the pass and first against the run. With just about all the pieces in place from last year’s unit, they should once again be at or near the top in these three categories again in 2010.

Last year Green Bay went 6-2 straight up at home and 5-3 on the road. It was 4-2 in the division with both losses coming to Minnesota. If the Packers are to have any chance of ending up on top in the North this year, they will have to find a way to beat the Vikings to get there.

Against the spread they were a very productive team, going 11-4-1; 5-2-1 at home and 6-2 on the road.

Green Bay won four out of its last five games in convincing fashion to end the 2009 regular season. With the exception of the defense’s breakdown in the playoffs, the Packers are one of the most balanced teams in the league.

With a shutdown defense and Aaron Rodgers behind center, there is no reason that Green Bay should not be one of the top two or three teams in the conference.

2010 Prediction: 1st in the NFC North
