Cleveland Current Odds to Win:
Browns AFC North Odds – 12/1
Browns AFC Championship Lines – 40/1
Browns 2011 Super Bowl Futures – 80/1
Cleveland Browns Season Over/Under Win Total – 5.5

In 2002 Cleveland went 9-7 and made the playoffs as a wildcard team. Since then the Browns have only had one winning season and have averaged just 5.5 wins per season.

In 2009 Cleveland finished last in the AFC North with a 5-11 record, just one win better than the 4-14 campaign in 2008.

In an effort to finally turn things around, longtime coach and GM Mike Holmgren was brought in as team President to hopefully pump some new life into this franchise.

Head coach Eric Mangini has been retained for this season, but Holmgren wasted little time showing everyone who is in charge by directing all the personnel moves this past offseason. Only time will tell how quickly they will begin to pay off.

The odds makers have listed the Browns at long odds to win their division and even longer odds to win AFC and/or the Super Bowl. Unless you have money to burn, I do not see any of these bets as an attractive proposition. An interesting angle could be the over/under on the projected win total of 5.5 games. There could definitely be enough improvement since last year to make the over an attractive bet.

One of Holmgren’s first moves was to bring in veteran QB Jake Delhomme, who was released by Carolina at the end of last season. The question here is does Delhomme have anything left in the tank after a moderately successful career that resulted in several winning seasons and a trip to the Super Bowl. After releasing their two starting QB’s from last season; Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, it appears that third round draft pick Colt McCoy from Texas will be the heir apparent if Delhomme proves to be a bust.

To take the pressure off the passing game expect Cleveland to try and run the ball behind Jerome Harrison, who led the team last season with 862 yards on 194 carries. As a team, the rushing offense was one of their strongest areas last season as the Browns averaged 130.4 yards per game on the ground; eighth best in the league.

Conversely, Cleveland’s passing game was a disaster. With a revolving door between Anderson and Quinn at QB, Mohamed Massaquoi was the leading receiver with 34 catches for 634 yards. Overall the team was ranked dead last in passing, averaging just 129.8 yards per game.

There are plenty of issues on defense as well, as Holmgren inherits a team that was ranked 31st overall, 29th against the pass and 28th against the run. Given these dramatic deficiencies, it is no wonder he decided to use the seventh overall pick in the draft to take CB Joe Haden, a player he believes the team can build a defense around. To further bolster the secondary, he selected FS T.J. Ward with the 38th overall pick. This gives the team two instant playmakers that should be able to make an immediate impact on this side of the ball.

One of Cleveland’s best offensive weapons over the past 11 seasons has been placekicker Phil Dawson. Entering his 12th season with the team he is currently the Browns third-leading career scorer and second for most field goals. Over his career he has completed 83.3 percent of his attempts ranking him eighth all-time among NFL kickers.

Cleveland has definitely taken some steps in the right direction this past offseason, but there are still far too many holes on this team for the Browns to seriously compete in their division this year. They are a team on the rise, but expect another season in the AFC North basement before beginning the climb to the top.

2010 Prediction: 4th in the AFC North
Win Total: OVER
