In 2008 Carolina won 12 games and was tied with the Giants for the best record in the NFC. A disastrous performance by QB Jake Delhomme in a 33-13 loss to Arizona in the first round of the playoffs carried into the 2009 season and led to a downward spiral that ended with the Panthers finishing third in the NFC South with an 8-8 record. After wholesale changes on both sides of the ball, Carolina is looking to get back on top in 2010.

Delhomme was released at the end of last season and the starting quarterback job currently belongs to four year veteran Matt Moore. In five starts at the end of last season he threw for 1,053 yards and eight TD’s. More importantly the team went 4-1 with him under center.

Optimism is running high that Moore could be one of the next great young quarterbacks in the league, but only time will tell if this is truly the case. If it does not work out, waiting in the wings is Carolina’s second round draft pick Jimmy Clausen, who could be the real QB of the future on this team.

Moore still has WR Steve Smith to throw the ball to and RB’s Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams to take the pressure off the passing game. Last season Smith caught 65 balls for 982 yards and Stewart and Williams each had over 1,100 yards rushing and combined for 17 TD’s.

Carolina’s offense finished 2009 ranked 19th overall. It was ranked 27th in passing, but third in running the ball. The Panthers used a third round pick in the draft to select WR Brandon LaFell and a sixth rounder to take WR David Gettis in an effort to address the passing game, but running the ball will still be the bread and butter of this team.

The biggest adjustment on defense will be trying to replace the productivity of DE Julius Peppers, who left the team via free agency. Peppers, a perennial All-Pro led the team with 10 ½ sacks last season and was a disruptive force whenever he was on the field. They drafted DE Greg Hardy in the sixth round and traded for LB Jamar Williams as an outside speed rusher, but these moves will not come close to filling this void.

Last year Carolina went 5-3 straight up at home and 3-5 on the road. The Panthers did win four out of six division games including a win over New Orleans in the final game of the season. Against the spread they were 9-7; 4-4 at home and 5-3 on the road.

The 2010 season is shaping up as a rebuilding year for Carolina. The Panthers are counting on a number of younger players in many of their skill positions which means there will be mistakes made along the way.

This team will be competitive, but a bit too young and inexperienced to keep up with teams like New Orleans and Atlanta in the division.

2010 Prediction: 3rd in the NFC South
Win Total: UNDER
