Baltimore needed a win in the final week of the 2009 regular season against Oakland to take its record to 9-7 and secure a spot in the playoffs. After coming away with a 21-13 win over the Raiders, it made the most of its opportunity by shocking the Patriots in New England 33-14 the following week in the Wildcard round.

The Ravens season finally came to an end in a 20-3 loss to the Colts in the Divisional round.

On offense, there were plenty of positive takeaways from last season that should carry over into the 2010 campaign.

In only his second season as the starter, QB Joe Flacco began to develop some better consistency down the stretch after struggling through a rough patch of games midway through the year. He ended 2009 completing 63.1 percent of his passes for 3,613 yards and 21 TD’s against just 12 interceptions.

RB Ray Rice had a breakout year gaining 1,339 yards on 254 carries for an average of 5.3 yards per attempt. He also led the team in receptions with 78 for an additional 702 yards of offense. WR Derrick Mason led the team in receiving yards with 1,028 on 73 catches and TE Todd Heap had 53 receptions for 593 yards.

A big addition to the mix in 2010 will be WR Anquan Boldin, who was traded to the Ravens by Arizona. Last season with the Cardinals, Boldin had 84 receptions for 1,024 yards and has gained over 1,000 yards receiving in five of his first seven seasons in the NFL.

The Ravens defense is once again one of the more formidable units in the league after falling off a bit in 2008. They ended the season ranked third overall in total yards (300.5) and points (16.3) allowed per game. The real strength of this team is their balance as they were ranked eighth against the pass and fifth against the run.

There are some early concerns for 2010 as All Pro S Ed Reed will miss the beginning of the season recovering from hip surgery and there is no timetable for his return. Backup CB Cary Williams has been suspended for the first two games of the season and first round draft pick DE/LB Sergio Kindle will miss the beginning of training camp while he recovers from a non-football related head injury.

Head Coach John Harbaugh begins his third season with his most talented team yet. There is star power on both sides of the lineup as this is probably the most well rounded team in the AFC. The Ravens are clearly the class of the AFC North and have shown the ability to play with the best teams in the conference.

They will get the chance to prove this fact when they open the season on the road against the New York Jets which could actually be an AFC Championship preview. In week six, they travel to New England for another shot at beating the Patriots on the road. In week 15 defending Super Bowl Champions, New Orleans comes to town in what should be an entertaining late season battle. All in all, Baltimore should definitely one of the elite teams in the conference in 2010 and worth a wager to go all the way.

2010 Prediction: 1st in the AFC North
Win Total: OVER
