Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Steelers season opener against the Atlanta Falcons wasn’t pretty at all, but they got the win. Expect that to be the way things look for the first few weeks as the Steelers go with Dennis Dixon at quarterback. The Steelers just hope that those ugly games keep producing wins.
With Dixon under center the Steelers are likely to keep a very vanilla offensive game plan. This means Rashard Mendenhall will get a lot of carries and many of the passes will be screens or short passes to the wide receivers. Hines Ward continues to produce well and Mike Wallace is quickly becoming a prime target on the outside. Heath Miller is a budding star at the tight end position. The offensive line hasn’t been too great over the last few years, and the Steelers will need this line to step up over the next few weeks.
The Steelers defense looked like the defense from a couple years ago last weekend. Troy Polamalu is back and his presence makes a huge difference for this defense. The Pittsburgh linebackers are probably the best in the NFL with Harrison and Woodley headlining a terrific group. The Steelers front line is also full of talent, with pass rushing specialists and run stuffers both on the field at all times. This defense should be one of the best in the NFL all year.
Tennessee
Vince Young is back as the starter of the Titans and this team appears ready for another strong season. They blew out the Raiders in impressive fashion in week one, but this will definitely be a tougher test.
Chris Johnson is the star of this offense, and many believe he is now the best running back in the NFL. Johnson sprinted to a 142 yard game in the season opener, but he has struggled against Pittsburgh in the past, so it will be an interesting matchup. Vince Young has shown impressive leadership skills over the last half of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. Young is still always a threat to scramble, but he is making good decisions when he throws the ball as well. Bo Scaife is a terrific option over the middle of the field and this offensive line is extremely solid.
The Titans defense produced four sacks in their season opener against Oakland, and they will definitely get after Dixon in this one as well. The front line isn’t as strong as it used to be against the run, but they are still decent. The secondary struggled mightily last year, but with guys like Courtland Finnegan and Chris Hope I think they are likely to bounce back in 2010. The strength of the defense will have to be the pass rush, which I expect them to try to utilize in every way possible this year.
The Pick:
