Drivers such as Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Dixon and Will Powers have already claimed victories in the IndyCar series this season and they will all be part of a very strong field for this year’s race.

The following is a look at my top favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday’s Indy 500 based on betting odds provided by Sportsbook.ag.

The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)

Montoya is at the top of the IndyCar series standings with 171 total points and Dixon has already claimed the pole position for the 99th Indy 500, but I am going with Helio Castroneves as my top favorite to win Sunday’s race at betting odds of +600.

He is third in the standings with 153 points, but still searching for his first checkered flag of the season.

The No. 3 car has made two trips to the podium with back-to-back second-place finishes at Avondale and Long Beach and it has also claimed two pole position starts this year.

Castroneves adds even more value to these odds with three Indy 500 titles during his career in this series.

He almost added a fourth with a second-place finish in last year’s event.

The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)

This is a race that is usually dominated by the favorites, but I still think there is some solid value in Marco Andretti’s +1200 odds to win his first ever Indy 500.

As part of the First Family of IndyCar racing, Andretti and his No. 27 car has finished inside the top 10 in three of the first five events it has run this season and the team is currently in 13th-place in the standings with 95 total points.

The main reason I like his chances to win on Sunday is a strong performance in this race.

Andretti has placed fourth or better in five of his nine career runs in the Indy 500 including a third-place finish in last year’s race.

The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)

It gets real tough finding value this far down the list, but I am going to take a flyer on Ryan Hunter-Reay at +2500 betting odds for Sunday’s race.

He is currently 12th in the standings with 100 points on the strength of a seventh-place finish at St. Petersburg and a fifth-place finish at Birmingham.

The main reason I like his chances at these longer odds is the simple fact that he comes in as the defending Indy 500 Champion after winning last year’s event.

The last time a driver won back-to-back titles was Castroneves in 2001 and 2002.
