Florida

It will be Urban Meyer’s last game on the sideline at Florida University, and there is no doubt the team will want to end his very successful tenure at the school with a win. This has been a disappointing year for the team, but Meyer has done a great job with this program.

The Florida offense just never hit its stride the way this season. John Brantley was supposed to be a prolific passer, but we didn’t see that this year. The passing game sputtered all year long, and the running game wasn’t that great either. Jeffrey Demps is the best big play maker in the backfield for Florida, but he isn’t an every down type of running back. Trey Burton and Chris Rainey have also been solid in their time in the backfield. No receiver had more than three touchdown receptions, and the team as a whole had just 12 touchdowns through the air all year long.

The Florida defense was very good this year. This unit kept the team in many games when the offense just wasn’t productive at all. The Gators defense was solid against the pass all year, and they have plenty of athleticism. They don’t have the great run stopper in the interior of the defense that they have had in some other years, and they has kept them from being great.

Penn State

Joe Paterno is still on the sideline at Penn State at 84 years of age, and he says he wants to keep coaching. Penn State slipped a bit this year, but the team did make some progress toward the end of the year.

The Penn State offense improved quite a bit when Matt McGloin was inserted into the starting lineup. McGloin threw 13 touchdowns and just four interceptions this year, and he helped provide the team with some much needed balance on offense. Evan Royster had a disappointing senior campaign, but the problems on the offensive line are at least partially to blame. Silas Redd has emerged as an impressive back, and he’ll see some time in this game as well. Derek Moye and Brett Brackett give the Nittany Lions two solid receivers who are quite reliable.

The Nittany Lions defense slipped a lot from its lofty status of the last couple years. Penn State struggled mightily against the run this year, but they were pretty good against the pass. Ohio State, Iowa, and Illinois all ran the ball very effectively against this Penn State defense. The front four underperformed this year, which put extra pressure on the linebackers and the secondary to help out in run defense. As a unit, they allowed 22.6 points per game during the regular season.

The Pick:

These teams are both down a lot from where they were a year or two ago, but both of these coaches are great when given extra time to prepare for a big game. I expect the intensity level to be high in this one. I think this is the type of game that will be decided in the last few minutes, which makes me think the underdog with seven points is the play.

Florida vs. Penn St. Score Prediction: Florida 24 Penn State 21
