Baltimore at New England Preview

Randy Moss didn’t give the Patriots much choice. They liked the way he stretched the field, running 7-8 go routes a game and drawing safeties to his side. They hated the way they had to stroke his ego. They loved the way he made impossible catches. They hated the way he whined about money. So in the end, they decided that enough was more than enough, and he was out.

With Moss gone and former Patriot Deion Branch returning, the Pats will more than likely revisit the style of play that won them three Super Bowls – methodically move the chains, frustrate and wear down the opposing defense by keeping it on the field for long drive after long drive, and in the process keep your own defense fresh for the fourth quarter when stops have to be made. It puts most of the decision-making in the hands of the people who won those titles – Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.

The Ravens, last seen at Foxboro stomping all over the Patriots in the playoffs last season, will be more than a good test for the Pats’ new approach. New England will have to be able to run the ball at a half-decent clip (BenJarvus Green-Ellis is at a healthy 4.57 yards a carry as he moves ever closer to becoming the featured back), and the Ravens are capable of making life hard for any RB. NE gained only 64 yards on the ground in that losing playoff game last January.

For New England, the best defense literally IS a good offense. The Patriots are riddled with problems, the No. 1 concern being the toxic combination of no pass rush and a young secondary.

NE is ranked 28th against the pass this season and 29th overall, so any time Patriots defenders are milling around of the sideline while the offense is at work is a good thing.

Picks: Baltimore +3 and Under 44.5

This thing has the look and feel of a field goal game as any edge the Ravens have is offset by the extra week that New England has had to prepare for the game.

Since 2002 the Patriots are 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS in games played following their bye week.
