BEST LINE OF THE WEEK

Giants (-3) over Redskins

We simply don’t know what to expect from Washington. It has John Beck penciled in to start at quarterback. If that’s true, it doesn’t matter what receivers Washington signs in free agency. Beck will struggle against an aggressive Giants pass rush.

The Redskins pass defense should also struggle against Eli Manning, Hakeem Nicks and the Giants’ aerial attack.

WORST LINE OF THE WEEK

Chargers (-7) over Vikings

I’m glad to see it come down from 9.5 – but the Chargers line still frightens me a bit. Large spreads early in a season are too unpredictable. And how many of your buddies bomb out every year with a “sure-thing” Survivor pool pick in Week 1? Crazy things happen.

The Vikings are flawed but I don’t see them getting routed.

UPSET OF THE WEEK

Panthers (+4) over Cardinals

Road game be damned. Arizona is a below-average defensive team that may seriously struggle to contain Jonathan Stewart, Cam Newton and perhaps DeAngelo Williams (who may re-sign after all) on the ground. Even if Arizona gets Kyle Orton or Kevin Kolb, the Panthers were solid against the pass a year ago.

I think they can pull the upset. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

OVER/UNDER PICK OF THE WEEK

Raiders @ Broncos OVER 42

This feels like a steal to me. Denver had the NFL’s worst defense last season, allowing 390.8 yards of offense per game. Darren McFadden is licking his chops. On the flipside, Oakland was terrible against the run last season and could have a tough time stopping Tim Tebow and Knowshon Moreno, I wouldn’t be surprised to see two teams combine for 50-plus points.

Six of the last eight Raiders/Broncos games have gone over the total.

THREE-GAME PARLAY

Packers (-6) over Saints

A risky play for sure at six points. But, the way I see it, Green Bay is just getting started after winning the Super Bowl. It didn’t play great football until the last four or five games of the season. This team will be healthier to start 2011 and Aaron Rodgers has reportedly lost weight. So much for the Super Bowl hangover.

Bad news for the Saints, who must overcome some offseason surgeries and break in some new offensive starters.

Texans (pk) over Colts

They beat Indy by 10 in Week 1 last year and I think the gap between these two teams has closed even more. The Colts couldn’t stop Arian Foster with a torn meniscus; what will the healthy version do to them? And will Peyton Manning be ready for action after offseason neck surgery?

Jaguars (-2.5) over Titans

The Blaine Gabbert era isn’t likely to start in Week 1. The capable David Garrard should get the nod against a Tennessee “D” that ranked 29th against the pass last season. Maurice Jones-Drew averaged 121.5 rushing yards over two games against Tennessee last year.

Considering that the Titans don’t know who their starting QB will be yet, Jacksonville at home by a field goal seems pretty safe.
