Neither the Raiders nor the 49’ers have had a winning season since 2002, when Oakland after finishing the season 11-5, won their third straight division title on their way to a fifth Super Bowl appearance, while the Niners lost in the second round of the playoffs to the eventual Champions Tampa Bay.

So to say that Nor Cal football fans are starving for some postseason football, is a huge understatement, as the Bay Area famine rages on.

However, while Niners’ fans have lost hope watching their team fall to 0-5 after last week’s 27-24 loss to the Eagles, the Black Hole has visions of playoffs dancing in their heads as the Raiders downed their archrivals, the San Diego Chargers, 35-27 last Sunday.

Can the 49’ers stop the bleeding? No 0-5 team has ever rebounded to make the playoffs and it just seems that San Francisco can’t do anything to win a game, even when they do some things right.

For all intensive purposes, Niners’ QB Alex Smith has been a major disappointment, and once again stained a solid outing against Philly tossing two interceptions while passing for 309 yards and two TDs.

Offensively the team is averaging just 15 points per game and the defense hasn’t really done its part either, allowing 26 points a game. As a team they rank 11th in passing yards with 233.6, but little of those passes have resulted in points.

The running game has been inconsistent, averaging 77 yards to rank 30th, which is really a shame since they pack one of the league’s most prolific running backs in Frank Gore. He has a total of just 322 yards on nearly 100 carries through five games with one TD.

Gore is due for a breakout game and he may get it against a Raiders defense that has allowed just under 150 rushing yards per game in 2010.

In their last two matchups, San Francisco won both games. The 49ers are 0-2 at home, while Oakland is 0-2 away.

The strength of the Raiders has been their ability to run the football, and ranks 7th overall with 134 yards per game.

With Darren McFadden out with a hamstring injury, Michael Bush, who ran for 104 yards on 26 carries with a touchdown, led the Raiders in its win over the Chargers, while defense and special teams also contributed to the victory, blocking two punts and sealing the game on Tyvon Branch’s 64-yard fumble return in the final minute.

The win has put the Raiders in a three-way tie for 2nd in the AFC West, just one win less than the division leading Chiefs.

Oakland has also had some issues at the quarterback position and will yet again make another change, as Jason Campbell who began the season as the starter but was pulled at halftime in Week 2, will return under center to replace an injured Bruce Gradkowski.

Gradkowski went 13 of 18 for 159 yards and a touchdown last weekend and has been mediocre at best, completing 53 of 102 attempts for 709 yards. As a team they rank 20th with 205 passing yards per game.

Defensively, Oakland has defended well against the pass but is still having trouble limiting the run as opponents have managed 147.8 yards putting second to last at 31st overall.

I expect the Raiders offense to have a good outing in this one, especially with its rushing attack. You can also expect the Oakland secondary to make it difficult for Smith to connect with any passes for major gains, as the 49’ers slide to 0-6, one loss away from their worst start since 1979.
