Dallas knows how important it is to win this game is after stumbling out of the gate last season with a 13-7 loss to Washington that cascaded into a disastrous 1-6 start. That was then and this is now with Jason Garrett at the helm as the new head coach and Tony Romo back as the starter at quarterback.
Romo missed the last 10 games of the 2010 season with a broken collar bone, but is completely healed and ready to go. He will have a full complement of weapons to try and put the ball in the end zone with Miles Austin, Jason Witten, and Dez Bryant as the primary receivers in the passing game and Felix Jones, Tashard Choice, and rookie DeMarco Murray anchoring the rushing attack.
Rex Ryan enters his third season as New York’s head coach and has guaranteed a Super Bowl victory after coming up short the last two seasons in the AFC Championship Game. The Jets finished the regular season in second-place in the AFC East with an overall record of 11-5 and went 5-3 straight-up at home.[soliloquy id=”82219″]
Ryan has built this team around a punishing running game and a shutdown defense, but if he is going to stay true to his Super Bowl promise, he will need Mark Sanchez to take the next step at becoming one of the better quarterbacks in the league. He did throw for 3,291 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, but completed just 54.8 percent of his passes and ended the year with a passer rating of 75.3.
One of the most intriguing matchups in this game will be on the sidelines as new Cowboy defensive coordinator Rob Ryan gets to match wits with his brother Rex. Dallas is 6-2 against the spread in its last eight games and the total has gone ‘over’ in 12 of its last 13 games. New York is 4-2 ATS in its last six games and the total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last six games.
There could be a bit of rust in Romo’s game on Sunday night, but the Cowboys keep things close enough to cover the 4.5-point spread.
