The South Florida Bulls, out of the Big East take on the ACC‘s Clemson Tigers on New Year’s Eve in the Mieneke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, NC. Kickoff from Bank of America Stadium is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

First year Head Coach Skip Holtz matched South Florida’s win total from the previous year with a 7-5 record overall (5-7 against the spread). He also matched its 3-4 SU conference record in a year that a few more wins could have meant a Big East title.

A 17-10 loss to Pittsburgh as a three-point home favorite and a 19-16 loss to Connecticut as a 2 ½-point home favorite was the difference between playing in this bowl and earning a spot in the BCS Fiesta Bowl. The highlight of the Bulls season was a 23-20 OT win over in-state rival Miami as a 13-point road underdog. This win should provide the necessary confidence in their attempt to take down another ACC foe. NFL Betting

South Florida lives and dies on the strength of a defense that finished the season ranked 19thin points allowed; giving up an average of just 19.5 per game. The Bulls’ offense was inconsistent all season long and averaged a measly 11 points a game in its five losses. Freshman QB Bobby Eveld may get the start in this game if B.J. Daniels is not ready to go. Eveld started the final two games of the season and threw for 450 yards and two TD’s.

Clemson dropped three of its first five games to start the season and lost two out of its last three to finish it, but somehow managed to squeeze out enough wins in between to qualify for a bowl. The Tigers 30-10 win over Wake Forest on Nov. 20 as 13 ½-point road favorite gave them their sixth win of the season, but a 29-7 loss to in-state rival South Carolina as a 2 ½-point home underdog the following week flattened out their record to 6-6 SU and 5-7 ATS. They ended up 4-4 in the ACC.

Much like South Florida, the Tigers relied on a stifling defense to carry them this season. Their defense ended the season ranked ninth in the nation in points allowed; giving up an average of 17.9 points per game. It appears that Clemson will go with QB Kyle Parker as its starter for this game despite the fact he was benched in the second half against South Carolina. His numbers on the year were very pedestrian with 2,079 yards passing and just 12 touchdown throws against 10 interceptions.

South Florida is 2-3 ATS in its last five games overall and the total has stayed ‘under’ the total in eight of its last 10 games.
Clemson is 4-3 ATS in its last seven games overall and the total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of its last 10 games.

There is no head-to-head history as this will be the first meeting between these two schools. The obvious pick in the game is the ‘under’ as this one is shaping up to be a low-scoring grinder. The low score would favor the Bulls as they should be able to keep this a one or two possession game late into the fourth. The problem is they do not have the horses to play from behind to close the gap to less than six points.

The Pick: Clemson -6 and UNDER
