NFL Lines – Coaching Incest in Houston Washington matchup

When the Houston Texans travel to Washington this Sunday, each team should know a little about each other. Houston Head Coach Gary Kubiak was a student of Washington Head Coach Mike Shanahan while Washington Offensive Coordinator, Kyle Shanahan held the same position under Kubiak the past two seasons. Both teams will be going for two wins in a row to start the season.

No team in the NFL feels as good about themselves after Week 1 as the Houston Texans. A win against division rivals Indianapolis has raised the confidence level and put the Texans in an unfamiliar spot – in first place in the AFC South. Sunday should be another good test against a Washington defense that held the mighty Dallas Cowboys in check on their way to a Week 1 victory.

The Texans offense was all about the run, not the pass for once. Arian Foster was responsible for 231 yards on the ground while Matt Schaub tallied 107 yards passing in the game. Houston will likely look for a more balanced effort this week but certainly won’t be disappointed with another huge rushing effort.

Houston’s defense terrorized the Indianapolis Colts last week for three quarters and now comes up against an offense that was only able to generate two field goals in Week 1. Mario Williams was a beast and should be able to improve upon his Week 1 effort against Donovan McNabb and an offensive line that had troubles generating any flow in their first outing.

The Washington Redskins got the win versus the Dallas Cowboys last week but that is about all that can be said for their performance. 250 yards total offense (171 passing and 89 yards rushing) isn’t nearly good enough against last season’s top NFL offense. They will need more offense this week in order to start an improbable 2-0 this season.

Defensively, the Skins played well, holding the Cowboys down for the majority of the game. Their new 3-4 scheme worked to near perfection, although they were suspect against the run – they gave up an average of 4.7 yards per carry against Dallas. Washington will lean on their defense once again this week, but unfortunately for them, they are facing a team that appears to be in mid-season form already.

NFL Lines Prediction:

Washington has played Houston tough in their last two meetings. They have won two straight by 16 points in each. But the 2010 Texans are not like the teams of the past. They have balance, legitimate threats and most importantly a confidence not seen in Houston. Washington is 4-11 at home ATS in their last 15 games and I think the trend continues. Houston is too stacked and too motivated to be denied the road win.

NFL Gambling Trends to consider:

The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Houston’s last 7 games on the road
Houston is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games on the road
Houston is 8-15 SU in its last 23 games on the road
Houston is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 12 of Washington’s last 16 games at home
The total has gone OVER in 8 of Washington’s last 11 games
Washington is 6-2-1 ATS in its last 9 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Washington’s last 6 games at home

NFL Lines Pick: Houston Texans -3
