NFL Lines – San Francisco and Seattle to Determine Early Front Runner for NFC West

The Seattle Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers in the first week of the regular season with the winner getting a standings and psychological boost in the race for the NFC West. San Francisco is favored but a look at the NFL Lines shows that even the oddmakers feel that this will be a tight game.

The balance of power in the NFC West will be determined very quickly as the San Francisco 49ers visit the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the Regular Season. The San Francisco 49ers bring with them a large amount of hype and expectations that they have not had in a very, very long time.

Most NFL Odds have them by far the best team in their division. We’ll see!

Give Mike Singletary some credit. He has made his team into a hardnosed, no nonsense bunch and he’s been able to straighten out the likes of Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree. This team has a good running game and their defense is good at stopping the run – a good recipe for success in the NFL.

However, anointed starting quarterback Alex Smith has yet to impress during the preseason. The fact is that he may not even be the best quarterback in the NFC West. Hopes of a breakout season have to be tempered just a bit – Frank Gore is still the reason that this team will win.

Pete Carroll, by all accounts has brought in a winning culture into the Seahawks camp. Training camp has been filled with healthy competition for each position and yet the players have admitted that this camp has been as enjoyable as any they had been a part of.

Along with Carroll, the Seahawks brought in the architect for the zone blocking scheme that made the Denver Broncos a successful running team for the past few decades. Justin Forsett and a healthy Leon Washington will give a huge boost to an offense that so sadly lacked a rushing threat over the past few seasons.

Matt Hasselbeck is healthy, the offensive line has improved and the competition for receptions in the preseason and training camp has bred an urgency that could benefit the team going forward.

Seattle defense is healthy and ready to prove that their performances over the past few seasons were a blip.

NFL Lines Perspective:

Seattle has looked decent in the preseason. They beat Tennessee and hung with Green Bay and Minnesota. San Francisco, on the other hand has just looked OK. The 49ers were 2-6 Straight Up on the road last season including a loss in Seattle. I think that the road woes continue and that the Seahawks kick off their campaign in style.

NFL Lines Pick: Seattle Seahawks +3
