Oregon

The game that everyone has been waiting for features two highly dynamic offenses centered around superstars.

For Oregon’s part, the gamebreaker is RB LaMichael James. The Heisman Trophy-contending speedster averages almost 160 rush yards per game and added a ridiculous 21 TDs on the season. James lost the Heisman race to the opposing QB in this match-up, but the sophomore has announced he will return for his junior season – fans will doubtlessly be hearing more from him.

The Ducks clear-cut through a Pac-10 schedule while scoring the most points for in the nation (just shy of 50 per game!) and finishing 4th in the FBS in rush offense. It wasn’t all scoring, either – the “D” finished 12th in the nation in points allowed (18.4 per game) and handled some tough teams like Stanford, Southern Cal and Arizona.

Oregon uses a spread attack that puts its emphasis on speed and forces a defense to be responsible everywhere on the field. If a defense gets caught cheating too much to make a stop in the backfield, second-year QB Darron Thomas can throw well enough (2,518 pass yards in 2010) to burn them. For an Auburn defense with some holes in it, there will be a daunting task in front of them not just stopping James, but the turbo-charged spread attack of head coach Chip Kelly. This season’s title game should truly be a classic.

Auburn

Much like Oregon, the Tigers have its extra-bright star, except Auburn QB Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy and is easily the most important single player to a college football team in years.

Though Auburn sports a sparkling 13-0 record, there have been imperfections on this football team. Yet every time, Newton does something dazzling to pull out another Tigers win. Auburn showed its mettle in an OT win over Clemson, an epic battle against LSU and, most importantly, a comeback win over hated Alabama – in hostile Tuscaloosa – in the Iron Bowl.

The Tigers had close calls often throughout the regular season, yet to go unbeaten in the SEC West is a remarkable accomplishment worthy of a number one team. Oregon must be very careful with not only Newton, but RB Michael Dyer (his 950 rush yards very nearly gave Auburn a pair of 1,000-yard rushers – Newton of course being the other) and a gritty veteran offensive line.

The only fitting way to finish such a perfect season is to come away with the National Title on Jan. 10 in Arizona.

The Pick

This match-up is everything you want in a title game, especially if you like offense. You should of course expect Newton to excel, but something interesting to watch is how an idiosyncratic Auburn defense handles a super-fast Ducks attack. The opportunities will be there for the Ducks to score a bunch of points. But it can’t feel right betting against Newton; anyone who has this season has ended up looking foolish. There will be a ton of points scored in this one and it should be a classic, but give Auburn the slight edge thanks to the Heisman winner.

Oregon vs. Auburn Score Prediction: Oregon 38 Auburn 42
