Connecticut

Oh, Big East-automatic-BCS-bid, how you vex us so.

In undeniably the least enthralling BCS match-up of the season, the Huskies and the Sooners clash in Arizona on New Year’s night. The Huskies bit and scratched their way to the top of the unintimidating Big East conference; they meet an Oklahoma team that almost perennially plays in a BCS bowl.

If the overmatched Huskies are to have a chance in this one, it has to be done on the legs of RB Jordan Todman. UConn pivot Zach Fraser (a Notre Dame transfer long ago) finishing with 1,200 yards and five TDs. Even with missing two mid-season games, that sucks. Todman was the offense’s bell cow, toting the ball 302 times for 1,574 yards and 14 TDs. He is almost the entire focus of the Connecticut attack.

Defensively, the Huskies are stout, though it doesn’t say much when the most impressive performances have come against FCS Texas Southern, Buffalo and Vanderbilt. UConn did come on strong at the end of the season, but no one in the conference really jumped off the map in terms of “degree of difficulty.” Suffice it to say, the Big East doesn’t field a competitor of Oklahoma’s caliber.

Oklahoma

The Sooners have an offense that will torch you any way they want. Quarterback Landry Jones racked up a video game-like 4,289 yards and 35 majors. Senior tailback DeMarco Murray eclipsed 1,100 rushing yards to go with 14 TDs. Feature WR Ryan Broyles had a ridiculous 118 receptions for almost 1,500 yards and 13 TDs. One way or another, Oklahoma is going to add to the points on the scoreboard.

OU finished fourth in the nation in passing, and the defense is nothing to sniff at either; yielding less than 22 points per game in the prolific Big 12 conference. Head coach Bob Stoops has his usual den of NFL talent to deploy and with the exception of slip-ups versus Missouri and Texas A&M, Stoops has deployed them well. Oklahoma’s defense will tend to stop an opponent enough for the offense to put the game out of reach. A bend-but-don’t-break defense works fine if the team’s offensive unit has extremely productive players in every facet, which Oklahoma does.

Oklahoma has recovered well since its last loss at Texas A&M on Nov. 13; it looks like the Huskies are destined to be the next team to be left in the Sooners’ wake.

Trends:

Connecticut is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Connecticut’s last 6 games
Oklahoma is 13-2 SU in its last 15 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Oklahoma’s last 6 games

The Pick

UConn’s Todman is a beast RB who is one of the most valuable players to his team in the nation. Yet the Huskies don’t have a whole lot to write home about beyond him, and that’s not enough to upset an Oklahoma team that has too many weapons and too much defensive speed. The Sooners should win this one easily, and expect a bunch of points to be scored.

Connecticut vs. Oklahoma Score Prediction: Connecticut 28 Oklahoma 49

Nebraska just lost 19-7 to an “inferior” UW Huskies team.
If the Sooners think that they can win over Uconn Huskies by just showing up, they are a very stupid team.
