It appears the books have the Florida Gators as the top team in the nation as they are only +175 to win the National Championship. These oddsmakers aren’t stupid, these are the defending National Champions with Tim Tebow still leading them at quarterback. Florida has 18 starters returning from last years team including all 11 players on defense. Florida will most likely go undefeated in the regular season this year with their only problem having to play in LSU on October 10th.

Oklahoma is second in line at +500 to win the National Championship this year. Oklahoma and Florida could easily play a rematch of last years BCS Title game this season. Oklahoma’s main opponent that could give them problems in the regular season is going to be Texas. These two teams meet in Dallas on October 17th. Other than that, the Sooners should have an easy road through the season as Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford leads them at quarterback again this season.

The sportsbooks have Texas at +650 to win the Title this year. With Mack Brown as their Head Coach, I feel like Texas will be a team to be reckoned with once again. They return 14 starters from last years 12-1 team including Heisman Finalist Quarterback Colt McCoy. Texas has to play at Oklahoma State on October 31st where Oklahoma State has a solid team returning this year. Oklahoma State played Texas close last year in Texas losing by only 28-24. Texas has to get by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to make some big time noise this year.

The books have Southern Cal as the 4th best preseason team in the nation at +800 to win it all. Wow, Pete Carroll enters his 9th year of coaching the Trojans. Carroll has an 88-15 overall record during that time. This team is always one of the most talented groups in the nation. They did lose their quarterback, Mark Sanchez to the NFL along with 10 other players. The bright side is they do have 9 starters back on offense including their entire offensive line and their four best running backs are back as well. I think they will have their hands full heading into California on October 3rd. Amazingly, Southern Cal hasn’t won the National Championship since 2004. Seems like it was just yesterday.

The 5th spot has two teams tied at +1200 to win the National Championship this year. Those two teams are Alabama and Ohio State. Let’s start with Alabama. Alabama returns 13 starters from last years 12-2 team including 9 on defense. Nick Saban is an excellent coach in my opinion. It looks like he will go with Greg McElroy at quarterback this season who we should see good things from. This team will still have some trouble this year in the very tough SEC. Ohio State returns only 11 starters from last yearas 10-3 team. The Big 10 has gone downhill recently in my opinion. Ohio State has Southern Cal in their 2nd game of the season and has to travel to Penn State and Michigan in the final 3 weeks of the season. I think Jim Tressel and company will have their hands full and may not get that 5th straight Big 10 title.

Here are my top 13 teams to play on ATS this year especially in the early going:

  1. UAB
  2. Arkansas
  3. Baylor
  4. Florida
  5. Indiana
  6. Middle Tennessee State
  7. Minnesota
  8. North Texas
  9. Temple
  10. Toledo
  11. Utah State
  12. Vanderbilt
  13. and Washington
