Indiana St vs. Eastern Michigan Week 1 Free Pick + Preview

NCAA Football Week One Free Picks – Indiana State at Eastern Michigan

With the 2008 NCAA football season less than two months away from getting underway in earnest, the BetUS NCAA college football wagering population can get prepared to get their respective 2008 NCAA college football bankrolls started off on the right foot with this Week One NCAA Football Free Pick in the BetUS Futures section of the BetUS Sportsbook.

While the Eastern Michigan Eagles, (4-8 SU, 4-7 ATS, 6-5 O/U) struggled in a big way in 2007 under head coach Jeff Genyk, going just 4-8 overall and a dismal 3-4 in conference play, their troubles were nothing compared to those of their week one opponent, the Indiana State Sycamores, (0-11 SU, 0-6 Conf.) who failed to win a single contest and head into the 2008 regular season with a new head coach running the program in Trent Miles.

With the Sycamores, basically starting from scratch under Miles – and not possessing much talent on the roster – Central Michigan stands an excellent chance, not only to win this game, but to blow the Sycamores out of the water, though they have their own issues, mostly on the defensive side of the ball after needing to find replacements for All-MAC and second-round NFL draft pick Jason Jones.

Still, the Eagles look like they have an excellent opportunity to post their first winning record since 1995.

The Eagles averaged 36 points per game in their last three games of the 2007 season, though they last season’s leading rusher in Pierre Walker. Junior quarterback Andy Schmitt should be better in 2008 with another year of experience under his belt.

The Eagles will face a Sycamores team that returns seven starters on offense including senior quarterback Reilly Murphy and six on defense from a team that averaged 11.2 points per game and gave up a whopping 49.2 per contest.

Indiana State, the school made famous by NBA legend Larry Bird, was absolutely pathetic on offense,, averaging just 87 yards per game on the ground and 58 yards per through the air.

The Eagles averaged 181 passing yards per game and another 156.5 yards per game on the ground to go along with 24.2 points per game.

Defensively, the Eagles allowed 423.6 yards per game and 31.2 points per contest.

Indiana State @ Eastern Michigan

Indiana State +38 Points -115

Eastern Michigan -38 Points -115

Analysis: I know the Sycamores are totally atrocious and that the Eastern Michigan Eagles will be improved a bit from last season, but I think the 38-point spread in this contest is a bit too high even though the Eagles are playing at home.

I like Eastern Michigan to win this game and win it handily, but I’m taking ‘Larry Bird U.’, a.k.a. Indiana State, to cover the highs 38-point spread.
