2014 Draft Preview
The Houston Texans were a hot mess last year, but they are reaping the benefits come 2014 Draft Day. Houston’s 11 picks is the most it has possessed since 2002, when the Texans selected a dozen players.
The Dallas Cowboys saw another playoff spot slip away from them in a Week 17 heartbreaker. Tony Romo wasn’t around for that final game, though he will be back in time for the start of the regular season.
The New England Patriots really had their depth put to the test last season after some injuries left them vulnerable at many key positions. Those trials and tribulations have given the team a good idea of where they need to improve entering this season, and they certainly won’t be looking for project players with an aging Tom Brady in tow.
The New York Jets were written off by many a year ago, but the team had a strong season with some big wins, finishing the year at .500. This season, the team looks to better that mark, and they spent some money in free agency to help achieve that goal.
The Buffalo Bills are coming off another disappointing season, and enter this year’s draft with some major holes to fill. The team’s brain trust of general manager Doug Whaley and head coach Doug Marrone proved right off the bat that they aren’t afraid to go off the board, selecting EJ Manuel in the first round a year ago.
The Miami Dolphins certainly won free agency a year ago, but the team is now feeling some pressure after a disappointing .500 season. They enter this year’s draft with some major needs along the offensive line, though their 19th overall selection could make that tricky to fill.
The Broncos had a great season until they ran into a buzzsaw in the form of the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
The Detroit Lions experienced another terrible second half and missed the playoffs in an NFC North that was ripe for the taking.
Without a doubt this franchise needs a quarterback. Drafting in the 8 spot they should have a chance to get one of the top prospects at the position but so far it has not been clear in which way they might be leaning.
2014 NFL Draft Handicapping Tips: St. Louis Rams
The St. Louis Rams enter the 2014 season in a familiar spot – with a top three draft pick and with added expectation that they will finally improve after years of disappointment.
The Cincinnati Bengals finished the 2013 NFL season 11-5, which was good enough for first place in the AFC North – tied for third in the AFC alongside the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs.
The Pittsburgh Steelers finished 2013 with an 8-8 record, which tied the Baltimore Ravens for second in the AFC North. Unfortunately for the team, it was left on the outside looking in when it came to the postseason.
The Arizona Cardinals will be eager to get back at it this season after finishing 10-6 and OUT of the playoffs last year. The good news is that they won’t face one NFC West foe in the first 10 weeks of the season.
The Seattle Seahawks begin defense of their Super Bowl Championship on Thursday, September 4 – at home versus Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Hawks predictably have a tough road this upcoming season – a first place schedule for a first place team.
Green Bay defied the odds last season and snuck into the playoffs even though QB Aaron Rodgers missed a good chunk of the season.
