It is getting harder and harder to remember that Troy used to dominate the Sun Belt. Sadly things are going about as well as expected this season.
[dfads params=’groups=63738&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
They have the lone win over New Mexico State, which means they won’t go zero for their conference slate but they don’t have much chance to hang a loss on the Jaguars. Fortunately in this unbalance league they draw a couple of the weaker program in November.
Those might actually be good opportunities so don’t completely forget about Troy.
Only three FBS teams give up more points than Troy. Last week they gave up 53 points to Appalachian State at home so the odds of things improving in the short term are not very good.
Not helping their defense is the fact that the offense is pretty terrible too. Troy scores less than 20ppg and their once powerful passing offense is now mediocre at best.
[dfads params=’groups=66501&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Troy is no longer a threat in the league.
The Jags lost their Sun Belt opener to Georgia Southern but have been keeping pace with them ever since with three wins in a row. Because of that loss they will need the Eagles to drop a couple of games but there is room for South Alabama to be in that top tier within the league.
They will have to play well though after this gimme. The rest of their conference schedule features games against the other league contender, teams like Lafayette and Arkansas State.
South Alabama is not a very explosive team but they are sound. The strongest part of their game is a running attack averaging close to 200ypg.
They use a lot of backs too with 4 already having passed 150 yards on the ground for the season, each averaging more than 4 yards per carry.
QB Brandon Bridge is a dual threat but he has to get better, he is completing only 51% of his passes and won’t be much help if they find themselves down in this one.

The Sun Belt is unfamiliar to many so don’t get caught up in the history of Troy and assume things are going to turn.
NCAAF Score prediction: South Alabama 27 – Troy 10
They are bad, South Alabama isn’t.

The Hurricanes (4-3) moved to one game over .500 after beating Cincinnati 55-34 at home two weeks ago.
Now with a week’s rest they Canes’ return to conference play in dire need of a league win if they want to keep their bowl hopes alive.
[dfads params=’groups=63738&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Miami last faced an ACC opponent , losing 28-17 at Georgia Tech on Oct. 4, but it will hope that it can continue its dominate ground the next time out, like the one that rolled up 335 yards versus the Bearcats.
However, the Hurricanes have not done well on the road this season, losing to Louisville, Nebraska and Georgia Tech, and will be challenged by the Hokies.
Offensively, Miami hasn’t had much trouble moving the ball, as demonstrated against Cincinnati, where the Hurricanes produced 621 total yards.
The team is led by quarterback Brad Kaaya who has thrown for 1,806 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.
[dfads params=’groups=66501&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Defensively, it’s been a different story. The Canes’ allowed 422 total yards to the Bearcats and have been mediocre at best this season on the defensive side to the football, allowing about 25 PPG.
The Hokies (4-3) began their 2014 campaign with a perfect 2-0 record, but have slipped to just one game over .500 after losing at Pittsburgh 21-16 last weekend.
Quarterback Michael Brewer led the offense in that one, passing for just 265 yards and a single touchdown to wide receiver Cam Phillips.
It was not a good offensive outing, as the running game struggled mightly, managing to produce just 26 yards the
entire game.
[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
To make things worse, the Hokies converted only two of their 14 third down attempts.
On the defensive side of the football, it wasn’t much better, as VT gave up 210 rushing yards to the Panthers. That’s unusual for a unit that only allows an average of 20 points per game.
* MIA are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 conference games.
* MIA are 2-7 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
* Under is 6-2 in MIA last 8 games in October.
* Under is 17-4 in VT last 21 Thu. games.
* Under is 8-3-1 in VT last 12 home games.
* VT are 20-9 ATS in their last 29 Thu. games.
* MIA are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 meetings.
* Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
The Hokies offense is struggling with only 28.4 points per game, and while Canes’ offense is lighting up the scoreboard, I think VT’s defense can hold them in check.
Virginia Tech is 2-2 at home this year and even though they have been inconsistent offensively, they should be able to put up enough points against a Miami defense that has given up a good amount of points this season.
Tech has won four of the last five meetings, so I’m going to take the home dog.
