Memphis Grizzlies (27-26)
Not many people would’ve guessed it two months ago but the Memphis Grizzlies have become the thorn in many a team’s side this season. At 27-26, they’ve climbed back into the Western Conference playoff hunt. They’re a very respectable 32-20-1 against the spread this season, too.
The Grizz are 13-8 in 2011 and had won five straight games before dropping consecutive contests to the Rockets and Lakers over the last few days. They continue to get All-Star-caliber play from Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph, both of whom average 20 points per game this season. Randolph’s personal troubles look to be in the rear-view mirror for the second straight season. He averages 13.2 rebounds to go with his 20 points.
Strangely enough, O.J. Mayo’s suspension hasn’t hurt the Grizz. They’re 5-2 since the league slapped him with a 10-game ban for violating the substance abuse policy.
Oklahoma City Thunder (33-17)
Oklahoma City is rolling, with home court in the first round of the NBA playoffs very much in its sights. The Thunder have won three straight games and five of six overall. While Oklahoma City still struggles on defense, ranking 21st in the Association with 102.6 points allowed per game, the offense is flowing. The Thunder have scored at least 111 points in four of their last five wins.
That isn’t hard to do when you have the NBA’s leading scorer, Kevin Durant, leading the way. He’s dominant but also consistent; Durant averages at least 29 points per game in four of five months this season.
Last Saturday’s 121-105 shellacking of Utah shows why the Thunder are more dangerous than ever before. Durant had 21 points and 12 boards, a decent but pedestrian night by his standards. But Jeff Green chipped in 20 points and Russell Westbrook led the charge with 33 points and 10 assists. This is by no means a one-man team.
The pick:
The Grizz have been pesky and effective this season but I don’t like their chances tonight. They played the Lakers in L.A. last night and they’re 1-6 ATS in their last seven trips to Oklahoma City. The Thunder are fresh and really clicking on all cylinders offensively.
Even though the Grizz are 8-1 ATS over their last nine when playing on zero days rest, I lean Oklahoma City’s way tonight. The Lakers and Thunder on consecutive nights are too much for a mediocre team to handle, especially with Oklahoma City hot.

You are right about that, the Grizzlies have taken the Lakers and other top contenders. I am surprised that Oklahoma City couldn’t beat them though, because they are a young team that can run with them. Usually the teams that have nothing to lose do the best against the best teams.
