The Juvenile Fillies – Friday November 5th Post Time: 6:50 P.M. (EST)
The Juvenile Fillies is open to fillies age 2 and up. It is contested on a dirt track at a distance of 1 1/6 mile with a total prize purse of $2,000,000. There are three automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race.
Just Louise
With two victories in her only two races in 2010, this filly has established herself as a legitimate contender for the Juvenile Fillies. She won a $48,000 non-stakes maiden weight special back on May 28th at Churchill Downs. Her second time out she won the grade III $100,000 Debutante Stakes also at Churchill Downs for her first career graded stakes victory.
Tell A Kelly
Kentucky Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel plans to be aboard this filly for the Juvenile Fillies according to trainer John Sadler. Tell A Kelly became one of the early favorites for this race after a victory in the grade I Darley Debutante Stakes at Del Mar on Sept. 4 in only her second career start. She followed this performance with a second place finish behind Rigoletta in the grade I Oak Leaf Stakes at Hollywood Park on Oct. 3.
A Z Warrior
This filly earned an automatic “Win and You’re In” entry into the Juvenile Fillies with an impressive victory in the grade I $300,000 Frizette Stakes for two-year olds at Belmont Park on Oct. 9. She won the race by 1 ¾ lengths over the favorite, R Heat Lightning, who went off at 9-5. This was her first win on dirt and a dramatic rebound from a disappointing fifth place finish in the Darley Debutante her previous time out.
Awesome Feather
After an extremely successful run in the filly division of the Florida Stallion Series that culminated with a convincing 8 ¼ length victory in the $350,000 My Dear Girl Stakes at Calder, this filly has to be considered one of the leading contenders for this race. Ridden by jockey Jeffery Sanchez, this race was never in doubt after she pulled into the lead at the top of the stretch and coasted to the win over Lily’s Hope, who finished a distant second.
