Boise State looks to keep its BCS Championship drive alive when it visits the New Mexico State Aggies this weekend. The Aggies have been getting killed all season, so they’re probably not sleeping very well knowing the Broncos are coming to town.
Boise State (3-0, 2-1 ATS) was desperate for a big showing against Oregon State last week and, though it got the win, it didn’t deliver the impact the team was hoping for. Crushing a ranked opponent would have helped the Broncos’ goal of making the BCS Championship, but they settled for a 37-24 victory.
The biggest problem was a horrible effort from special teams. The Beavers returned a punt for a touchdown, a kickoff 40 yards to set up a field goal, and recovered a muffed punt to set up another touchdown.
Beyond that, Boise State took care of business. Kellen Moore continued humming along, throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns. Moore is also getting ample help from the ground attack, which is averaging over 200 yards a game. On the other side of the football, the Broncos held Oregon State to just 237 yards while racking up four sacks. Boise State failed to record a turnover, though, something that should be improved moving forward.
New Mexico State (0-3, 0-3 ATS) has collapsed out of the gate, including a 42-16 demolition at Kansas last weekend. The average score of an Aggies game this season has been 41-15 for the opponent, so clearly they aren’t getting it done in any phase of the game.
The offense claims it has the fire power to get the job done, but that remains to be seen. Receiver Marcus Allen looks like the team’s only credible threat, though he’s a really good one. Allen was about the only player who showed up against Kansas, racking up 134 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Aggies are getting torched; they’re allowing over 500 yards per game. They can’t stop either the run or the pass. If there’s one benefit of getting scored on so much, it’s that Taveon Rogers gets to return so many kicks. The junior took three of his six kick returns against Kansas for more than 40 yards, en route to a school-record 219 kick return yards.
Boise State faces a gigantic spread to cover but, frankly, this is what Boise State does: load up a schedule full of cream puffs and absolutely crush them. It will be more of the same on Saturday. New Mexico State has already been destroyed by three opponents who can’t hold a candle to the Broncos.
